You’re out of your mind. The 5k may be the easiest for him to break. Double world champ and 2 mile world record holder. This dude can probably run sub 4 pace for 5k.
You guys act like he’s an 800 guy moving up. Make no mistake, Ingy is a 5000 guy moving down. As I recall, Haile had some sick 1500s and marathons. So there is one example. He just chose to focus on the 5 and 10. Gidey is another. Possibly Hassan. I bet Kipchoge could have run 3:45 in super shoes w/pacing lights when he was racing the 5000. And he is your world record holder at marathon.
Definitely. 3:27, 3:43, 4:43, and 7:54 - how can he NOT run 12:30?

It's weird to me how many people just take it for granted that he'll be better at the 5k than the 1500 and easily get that record.
"he's a 5k guy moving down" based on what?
A guy in the prime of his career chooses to focus on one event, and it's supposed to be so obvious he'd actually be better at another? Obviously he's a great 5k runner and has won championships at that distance, but is he a great 5k time trialer? who knows. Lots of great runners haven't been able to go out and hammer out perfect splits by themselves for the last 2000 meters. He's also a bigger guy than most 5/10 dudes, and that likely means that weather will be a bigger factor.
He's an amazing athlete and I would not be shocked if he set the 5k record, but its not the lock that many here are saying it is. 10k or anything higher is a long shot.

Based on what? Beating a bunch of 12:40 guys in the 5000 at WC's twice sure doesn't hurt.

I think Jakob can run a great 5,000. To be fair though, the Ethiopians so much underachieve in these races, Grijalva/Krop/Katir are the better guys to base his performance off of. That being the case, in 2022 he beat a 12:45 fitness Krop quite convincingly. This year (sick), he beat Krop/Luis (in high 12:40s shape) and Katir (12:45 shape) narrowly. He is definitely great in championship 5ks but it’d be misleading to say he’s definitely in 12:30 shape because of his margin on the underachievers Aregawi and Kejelcha. I do think he could beat Cheptegei’s WR narrowly, but that’s partially because it isn’t the strongest (70 dewpoint) due to sub-ideal conditions.

He has two non-championship distance records. He is so on his way to owning every record from the 1500 to the marathon. In my generation that was called a "blowhard". Ron Clarke leaves him in the dust when it comes to breaking records - and ones that mattered.
This blowhard: olympic medal, wc medals, 2 records with a bright future. You, a stand up citizen: bitter old man, who spends his days rotting on a message board with nothing to show for it.
I'd take a blowhard any day of the week.
Ron Clarke set 17 world records to Jakob's 2. There are no guarantees he will set any more. That's a blowhard. But your kind of guy.
He might want to start with getting one of the main ones first. The 1500, steeple, 5000m, 10000m, marathon are the standard events. He doesn't have any of them. His 2k and 2 mile records are not better than the 1500 3k or 5k equivalent records.
You should just stop here. You appear clueless. Shaheen/Cherono was a 12:48 runner and Henry Rono was one of the best runners in history. Jakob might be able to run 7:55. Maybe.
No, i'm not stopping there, and I'll bump this thread when it happens.
Shaheen best performances outside of the steeple were 4rth in the world XC champ short race and 12:48 which is nowhere close to the WR. It's just not the same league as the names above. You can't argue that. And, in addition to having more talent, Jakob has also some technological advantages compared to that time. You should reconsider it.
Even if he does break the steeple world record, by no means would it be easy. If that were true and 7:51 is easy for him we can expect him to run what, 7:45 in his first recent attempt? Just say you think he has an excellent shot of breaking the record, but you sound ridiculous when suggesting people can break world records easily.

This is a logical post, though i give him something for beating a peak Kejelcha in the 3000, while running from the front for the final 1400, and one day after the mile. I have no doubt that Kejelcha is in sub 12:40 shape, possibly record shape. While also being something around a 3:30 1500 type athlete.

though the steeple is a "medal event" I don't think it's any more of a main event than the 3000. In fact I would definitely call the 3000 record more prestigious.

Fair enough and he definitely deserves credit. Though I think he beat Kejelcha mostly through superior tactics (last lap 54-25.8 squeeze) with Kejelcha failing to grab the lead before the bell. But of course it’s about finding a way to win even on tired legs. Kejelcha is a tough matchup in the 3,000 though even tougher in the 5,000, so it would’ve been interesting if the race distance was that. We’ll see if they go for it in Riga. I suspect there’s a nice record bonus and no better time to attack sub-12:40 or even 12:35.

Based on his training geared towards threshold since hes 11 and the fact that hes a double world champ in the 5k but has yet to win a 1500 WC title.

his 2 miles record is definitely stronger than the 3k and arguably the 5k WR.

I agree. I'm a ingy fanboy but 12:30 sounds outlandish to me. More like 12:33-34
