He ran 4:51.1 during his 2 mile WR, I would say he has a great shot here.
His 2 mile record, that had no pace maker for most of the last mile (pacer dropped out at 1 mile + 100m, but had gapped him before 1 mile mark), and was probably raced at unpeaked fitness, indicates yes - if his legs are fresh and he's at peak aerobic conditioning for the 2k.
But can he continue his peak after the last WC event till Sept 8 Brussels, or does he have a brief rest and re-peak during that 12 day break? The National Strength and Conditioning Assoc says aerobic peak can be maintained for 1-2 weeks, that seems too short, Seb Coe had an amazing 41 days peak of record setting in the 800m/1500m/mile back in 1979.
Also he's risking overtraining: the WC schedule has 1500m on Aug 19,20,23, and 5k on Aug 24, 27. I'm going to be burnt out just from watching all that let alone running it. iow, mental fatigue is another issue. When he ran his first 327 he said he still felt tiredness in his legs from the 2 mile, i think that was 6 days later, but i think he was still training pretty hard throughout. He's only 22 so should recover quickly, and the heats should be relatively easy for him.
tldr; yes if peaked/fresh, no if he's overcooked it.

Jakob raced the two miles because Komen gave it an existence and Jakob chose to keep it alive. The race was made up fo him so doest matter where it takes place. I can tell you there is no 2miles races in France at any level as I live there. If you want to disagree, you can focus on the exception, yes.
No I don’t want to disagree in this. Just saying that some of us enjoyed his 2 mile run, and thought that it was an interesting result. And the same to be said about the 2000m; exciting, interesting…
Jakob is so pathetic. He knows he can’t touch the GOAT’s 1500 and mile records, so he has to resort to going after an obscure record nobody cares about.
No kidding, just look at the last six men to set the 2000m world record:
Hicham El Guerrouj
Noureddine Morceli
Said Aouita
Steve Cram
John Walker
Michel Jazy
Just a bunch of nobodies I’d never heard of who couldn’t break any real records.
El Guerrouj, Morceli and Aouita didn’t go after the 2000 record until AFTER they had already broken the 1500 and/or mile records. Unlike Jakob, they didn’t use the 2000 as a pathetic coping mechanism for not being able to break the illustrious 1500 and mile records.
Last time...I promise.
He's done 3:27.14, and maybe he will do 3:25.97 before this 2000m.
does anybody know when the 2 mile record's status was rescinded by the IAAF?
At least 10 years. And if there's still a 2000m "record," it's long overdue to be dropped too. It's not a competitive distance at any level of the sport.

For three years, Charles Philibert-Thiboutot wondered if he would run on the track after his career was derailed by several injuries. Now, with the help of a sports psychologist, the Quebec City native has booked a spot at th...
If he’s healthy I’ll predict 4:44. Whether it’s over or under 4:44.7 we’ll have to wait and see. I think everyone needs to remember that he effectively just ran 7:19/7:20 - if you’d suggested that was possible even two years ago after he won the Olympics, you’d be considered delusional. He’s on a different level now and although 3000m may be slightly better for him than 2000m, I have a hard time seeing how he’s not fit enough to average 56.8-56.9 over 5 laps of the track.
Wow this is cool. I wonder if this means that he is shutting down the fast 1500's for the season though? Post Budapest there was Zurich, Brussels and then the mile in Eugene and there were/are rumors he might go after a time over 5000m in Zurich which means no more metric miles this outdoor season apart from obviously in Budapest.
Can he get this one? I like his chances. He needs to basically run low 57's for 4 laps and then crank out a 54 high/55 low - a formula that seems very "Jakob'ish" these days. However we have to see how fatigued he is post Budapest and whatever happens in Zurich.
His season is now really starting to feel like one of those prime El G seasons (like 99) where the number of high quality performances one after another is just astounding. Good luck to him, will be fun to watch.
"[M]etric miles" - blech! Please expunge that from your usage.

I enjoyed it as well. But that doesn't make the 2miles less obscure. I would enjoy a 4000 race also

Well I care. So, you are wrong.
I think many of the great milers added the 2k record. John Walker did, Cram, Aouita, Morceli, and El G.
