Solid rationale but that boy is too goofy. It would take years, well into his late 20s to come close to figure it out. He lacks coordination and athleticism.
Thank you. I was sampling this thread and amazed nobody had made that point. Results can sometimes be set aside and projections ignored when there's an obvious lag in athletic ability.

I guess being a pro track guy doesn’t qualify as being athletic in your book.
If you had done any research you would have quickly found out he was quite good at soccer & lacrosse in his youth.
The new Evan Jager. Jager was a 3:32 1500m and 13:02 5,000m. Teare is sitting at 3:32/13:06, so very very similar. Jager was 23 when he did his first steeple, Teare is 23 now. Maybe he should do a steeple race in Europe this summer before it's too late (he turns 24 on August 18th)
It’s Jerry, he’ll steeple in practice for 18 months before running a race. He’s probably already started

Yep, his pee wee league experience ingrained motor patterns he maintains until this day. I’m basing it on how he carries himself in a race, not very athletic or coordinated.
I see what you are seeing & he is a little mechanical, but guys like Larry Bird & Jim Furyk the golfer are similar but have that ability to get the job done. Sports are mysterious, have you ever seen Charles Barkley swing a golf club - there’s no way that guy can play basketball. Just saying - let’s give Teare the benefit of the doubt. As Jager says some guys got it and some don’t. So maybe.
This is a good call. Teare has no weapons for the 1500. With a lot of luck, he could possibly make a global final, but more likely, he'd have a career like Johnny Gregorek.
Johnny Gregorek did make a global final (2017 Worlds)
Sure, that's my point. He made one global final, wasn't competitive, probably won't make another. I think it's a a solid career but Teare will want more for himself.
You've never watched Dan Lincoln then. Lost ground over the barriers against Kenyans. Lost ground over the barriers against Americans. Lincoln was good at the steeplechase because the 35 walls didn't phase him. The Americans who cleared the barriers better than him just couldn't handle it.. The steeplechase is an event of its own. Runners who are good with the unpredictable nature of the event excel at it. Some runners have it, the great majority dont.
My best advice is to try the event first before opining on your potential. Or at least be a student of the event for 50 years.

Here’s an example, I watched Ritz warm up, in his prime, just before going to Salazar. The sprint drills were elite sprinter quality in how reactive he was to the ground, how crisp everything fired, etc. I’ve watched Teare warm up, and he looks like a typical high school distance runner, sloppy, flaccid, not snappy. I like the kid a lot and I’m sure he can get it done running in a straight line but having to steer to take off at barriers, tiring or picking up the pace, with people around him, requires athleticism and coordination that I do not think he has.

- I don’t see any validity in comparing the body language of a pro in his prime (your words) doing speed work/sprints and another elite who is just warming up. - - Teare is not just a track guy, he has a successful history of XC. 6th as a Sophomore at NCAA’s (all American) shows he can handle obstacles & is not just a “straight line “ runner. Your snarky dismissal of his soccer & lacrosse is concerning. - Labeling him as “goofy” and implying that due to his athletic limitations he would need years to figure out SC, seems foolish considering the guy was able finished up his degree in Business in 4 years while setting national college records.
Surprised no-one's mentioned George Beamish yet. He (and Ritz) have come to the exact same realisation, probably sped up because NZ take ridiculously small teams to championships. He's ran like 4 steeples ever and he's already ranked right up there

I wonder if steeple is an attitude though, I never steepled myself, so I can't say. But look at the way Geordie Beamish finishes every race, he's gutsy.

I'm pretty sure I'd still take peak Teare in a 100m dash over peak Ritz. People with shorter legs, like Ritz, tend to have faster turnover and ~look~ faster than tall gangly dudes like Teare. The tall guys have the advantage of stride length and generally don't even look like they're running hard even when they're in a dead sprint.
