I am amped for Hiltz. I think people are (rightly) concerned about the trans issue in women's sports and somehow (wrongly) lump Hiltz into this topic.
That is not what is happening, Hiltz is clear about "not feeling like a woman" sometimes and that is what being non-binary means. That should not trigger anyone. It is a thing some people (not you or me) feel. No need for the stress.
If we mess up the pronouns, no stress either, mistakes happen. Just don't do it on purpose.
I am very much in favor of trans people remaining in their birth category for sports, so I’m certainly not mad Hiltz runs in the women’s category. I think for a lot of people who rag on Hiltz there are three things going on, in some combination:
1. They think the entire trans thing, whether that’s “trans women are literally women!” or “non-binary identities are valid!” or whatever is complete baloney. I admit to being in this category, I think Hiltz is a woman who feels a bit androgynous and has glommed into a currently trendy way of expressing that which makes her feeling out to be deeper than it really is, i.e. claiming to be literally genderless.
2. The fact that we can’t get consistency from the trans activists re: gender/sex. Sometimes, they say trans women are women do they should compete with women, like Lia Thomas. They also say Nikki Hiltz is not a woman, but can compete in women’s events because she’s biologically female, or whatever phrase activists use that week. They can’t decide whether “sex” or “gender” is what matters, except that “whatever lets my favored athlete compete with women, is what I care about today.” That’s some illogical nonsense.
3. Hiltz has been an absolute pill about MiSgEnDeRiNg in the past. Like, one commentator says “she” once and Hiltz posts five paragraphs on instagram about how she isn’t upset on her own account, oh no, but for all the gEnDeR-nOnCoNfOrMiNg kids who are totally watching and totally think of Hiltz as they/their hero! Not upset personally, though! Let’s be real, about any other issue of similarly small magnitude, someone who made that kind of post would get obliterated, but because “woman with short hair” has been redefined as a super-oppressed class since done people say “she” about them, Hiltz got a free pass.
By the way, my wife who is not a runner and doesn’t know about Hiltz watched the meet with me last night and when they showed Hiltz in close-up after the finish my wife said “whoa, she’s a throwback from the 80s!” If only my wife knew what a bigot she was!
I don't care for Nikki and I won't celebrate her successes. I think she probably means well, but is a self-centered narcissist.
This stuff is just not that important and you are making your life harder than it needs to be when this is one of the main focuses of your existence.
you are not the sun, nikki. just stop.
“When the people that are calling the race misgender me and then they apologize, I can’t just be like, ‘Oh, no worries, it’s okay.’ Because it’s not,” “I think there’s definitely been awkward moments with that. But, overall, the longer that I’m out and the more people that know my pronouns and use them, it has been really rewarding.”
I think its because she insists on everyone calling her they/them,and saying shes not a woman, yet competes as a woman,in womens races. You cant have it both ways.
Actually, you can have it both ways, if you understand the qualification to be in the women's race, and have more than three brain cells.
Also, the "insists" point you could rewrite as "insists on everyone showing basic decency and respect, which they are predominantly incapable of showing, as I have proved."
Third, gender is a societal construct, as is language. Nothing in the creation of the world ever said that because someone is born with female genitalia has to be called a she or be classified as a woman, or any of this stuff. For hundreds and hundreds of years, Indigenous groups have had the concept of non-binary people, people who are just people, rather than being forced to conform to the roles of man or women. Many languages today don't even have gender-specific pronouns. It is not un-godly or mentally-ill to just not want to conform to a set of preferential rules society has put in front of you, especially not if others who don't identify with such constructs have come before you for hundred of years.
Another note on language... the singular they/them pronoun has been in use since 1345 according to the Oxford English dictionary. I will repeat that... they/them as a singular set of pronouns has been in use for 700 years, according to the OXFORD EN˝GLISH DICTIONARY, THE MOST DEFINITIVE DICTIONARY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. I am almost 100% sure you use they as a singular pronoun on a daily basis without even realizing it.
And if for whatever reason, that doesn't give you some understanding about non-binary pronouns in the English language, think about it like a nickname. Why is it so absurd that someone born as a she wants to be called they, if guys named Richard get to be called Dick, Roberts are called Bob, etc.? It's not that hard. It's respect. Please, guys, treat people with kindness.
I completely respect Hiltz's wish to be called by whatever pronoun they chooses, regardless of how tortured that makes this sentence. But as tortured as my sentence is, your logic is even more tortured. Specious, disjointed and out of context. I fully support being kind to others but surely you can do better in justifying the use of "them/they" for an individual bio female.
Congrats to Hiltz! So many people wrote off NiKkI during the sponsorship change and are altogether immature when Hiltz shows up and performs, which has been frequent lately much to the dismay of the haters. Nikki is a great American middle distance runner 🇺🇸

No, you can't have it both ways if you want people to take your identity seriously. Sure, we can entertain the idea in order to be polite (like we might pretend a child is a t-rex to make them happy) but nobody is going to sincerely consider her not to be a woman when she happily participates in the "women's 1500m". She knows it's called that but she participates anyway. If you genuinely consider yourself not to be a member of a group then you must actually commit to distancing yourself from that group and anything associated with that group at all times.
You can have whatever fantasy you want in your head. It might even be healthy to do so at times. That part is totally fine. Asking other people to participate in your fantasy or delusion is another matter altogether.
the forcing of awkward pronouns on everybody is just annoying. this crap about what it is to feel like a man or woman is just a mental health issue imo, completely irrelevant and whether they mean it or not has everybody else walking on eggshells about precise language for something that is trivial and should be unimportant
The same zealots that coined "microaggressions" are profligate in weaponizing the concept. The purpose of all of this is destabilization of society to promote Marxist cultural infiltration and seizure of every aspect. I doubt Nikki has any awareness of this but her role is undeniable.
They is hard to talk about. I think Hiltz's pronoun choice hurts her marketability and popularity. Non-binary people need something better than they/them.
Agree. They have names. Just call them by their names.

If I was listening to this race on the radio I truly would have thought that this was a relay race and this was the only way Mu could be beaten...
