If I was doing contracts, I think I would be paying more for NIL than I would for all but the top half dozen pros. Who cares about some girl running a 4:02 and being 6th at US compared to someone running 4:10 and get tv time at relays, conference, and national meets. And I bet most have better name recognization among the HS crowd (i.e. a good chunk of the track market).
And realistically a good chunk of the value is in looking good and social media posts versus track performance. That is the world we live in.
Maybe in a different world Valby would have gotten paid and Nike would have foundsomething--table scraps even--to offer a runner such as Olivia Markezich (a three-season gamer who stays healthy and races often; almost always on or near the podium at big meets across multiple events; has already entered the company of Frerichs and Wayment as the greatest NCAA steeplechasers of all-time; current trajectory marks her as a future Olympian; a thrilling runner to watch--a smooth, controlled racer with a devastating kick).
Realistically, how much is any runner worth? 5k? 10k? We aren't talking about people with 100k followers or a zillion people making an effort to see them race. Heck on this board how many Olivia threads have there been?Top couple people get all the attention
The NIL deals at first really confused me but not so much anymore. Rather than throw major bank at these athletes, you throw them a smaller amount of cash and get them for a trial run.
But I have no idea how much less these deals are than if they were full time pros? Does anyone know? Do they get 25%, 50%, 75% of a normal contract? I have no idea.
Let's hope she got at least 20k ;)
It's way, way more than that, for some, and it's not always based off talent. They're paying for Instagram followers and content basically. For some, say a national championship winner with a million Instagram followers, the contract could be more than a pro runner gets.
For somebody like Valby, with 30k followers, the cost of a sponsored Instagram Post would be $175. So just for her Instagram alone, not including appearance fees, that's probably close to $30k. Then appearance fees for meets, appearances in ads, and in Nike generated content. That's probably at least another $30-50k. So I'd say at least $75k.
But if they feel the upside is high for someone like her, they might even take a risk and award a guaranteed NIL deal (because NIL deals prohibit performance based incentives) in the low or even mid six figures, because then they wouldn't have to pay bonus $$$ if she goes onto win the Olympics, and for her it's guaranteed $, so she might be willing to take less to have some.

I was following you right up until the "if she goes onto win the Olympics" part.
Can't wait to see her in Nike ads. Valbymania is slowly sweeping the nation! 2023 NCAA Outdoor 5,000m Champion! Soon to be 2023 NCAA Cross Country Champion, 2024 NCAA Indoor 5,000m Champion, 2024 NCAA Outdoor 5,000m Champion, and NCAA 5,000m Record Holder! World Class! Generational Talent! Astroloser the Drug Accuser goes home devastated!
Just to be clear, she got a call from Phil Knight saying that he had been wrongfully imprisoned in Equatorial Guinea, and all she had to do to be Nike's first T and F female was to deposit a $200,000 check into her account, and then wire him $20k from Walmart for his release.

lol. Or the $20k was the Agent’s Fee immediately taken off-the-top, which she considered to be kind-of-scammy.
Were the replies in her interview on the LR article created by Chat GPT or just forged by the Brojos? Such dry responses...
Seriously. Not as outlandish as some of the answers on the recent pod. Nobody in Florida just walks up to a gator on a trail, you steer clear and wide, even if you have to bushwhack through thorns and poison ivy. Or her other claim that a group of wild boars were friendly? I’ve had a friend chased by boars in North Florida. Those things are out to harm to protect themselves. Maybe Nike saw her value as a Snow White beast master and friend of the creatures of the forest? Who initiates this deal though? Her family? Nike? UF? Her reps? Did she have reps before the deal? Is this a guarantee for Nike that she can only transfer to another Nike school? How are Diggs and Moore not questioning why they’re multiple championships did not gain them this kind of deal? What has Hicks done for Nine since penning his deal, is it all on social media?

A runner is not worth much. A hot girl posting bikini pics on Instagram is worth more than any runner. A hot girl in a bikini, ahem, running clothes who is also a good runner is worth a ton of money. There's a reason Tuohy beats her at every race yet doesn't win a Nike sponsorship.

We have had ZERO Olivia threads and 1,756 Katelyn Tuohy threads.
Valby was disappointed tuohy didn’t show up to take her whooping in the heat of the night.
Valby was disappointed that Tuohy got an NIL deal and she didn't until now. Tuohy runs in races with pros and Valby doesn't. Valby is always MIA until this last fluke of a 5K title she got. Nike will be expecting alot for the money they're paying. Time to put down the makeup and start racing

Kate Tuohy runs in pro races? She finished 7th in a race with mediocre college runners. Then she mimicked Roberto Duran and said "no mas" when she was to run in the 5000.
