So when all is said and done, only 1 Newbury park kid breaks 4 in HS?
Rain & lack of a pacer eliminated a fast enough pace. Off his 1500s and his showing in this race Leo was clearly capable of sub 4. Oh well, on to college...
Leo said that this was going to be his last race. But I think he will change his mind. I think that Leo will run another mile.
No way Leo wants to leave high school not breaking 4 minutes in the mile, especially since so many of his peers have done it.
Birnbaum is for real! After seeing his race against the pros on Friday night and this one, he could become the best American miler ever. Our 1500 squad for LA28 could be unreal!
And Birnbaum gets it! Bad move by Leo to not hammer it on the third lap knowing Birnbaum's come from behind ability
IF he could have, he sure should have, because it looked like Birnbaum could have won that race about any way he wanted to.
Maybe he could have, but with the way he looked and how far he hung back I think he may have been a little fatigued. It seems like allowing him to run 3:06 through 3/4 and still be in it made it easier for him to rally and repeat one more time what he’s been doing all spring. Leo should have gone from further out IMO.

NOW the rain stops and the sun comes out. Why couldn't that have happened in time for the boys championships mile?
To add, I love that this kid did so much successful racing during the week. What a great simulation of running rounds at a major championship. Birnbaum already has that strength while still developing. Let's hope that Schumacher can turn him into a world beater!

He did look fatigued. It was an opportunity for Leo to win, but Leo didn't look fantastic either. Sometimes the rain takes it our of everyone. And all of them looked a bit more nervous than usual on the start.
Birnbaum is interesting. Smartly coached. Some limitations imposed by the South Dakota winters in terms of training, imposing less readiness for indoor, probably making for a later peak in the year, and leaving a lot on the table for increased training as a collegiate. Feels like there is lots of room for him to get better.

Such a shame we couldn’t see him run anything other than 1500s. His XC performances and the comparison with Lex indicate he could have run a pretty crazy 5k/two miles. I don’t even think he’s a miler, somewhere between two miles - 5k is probably his perfect distance, just like his brothers. Stat gangsta says that he was totally capable of breaking the two miles record of 7:29 if he’s in the same 5000m shape as Lex while having 3:39 speed.
But yeah props to Birnbaum, he actually raced everyone and beat everyone this outdoor season, and even if I don’t really like him, props to Burns because he raced a lot at all distances and was never afraid.
And their season probably isn’t even over considering Burns wants to race in Europe and Birnbaum said he wants to race at USA’s.

What are you talking about? Leo looked great. Didn't you see his last 100? Leo was flying. He just got beat by a guy with an even better kick.
Burns goes home far more devastated than Leo IMO. His interviews talking about how he and Simeon are the clear best two HS milers and incessant trash talk is dumb. Glad Leo beat him
burns has been pretty inconsistent in the mile, but i think most of us agree he's a future 5k star. I think he's made it clear he's more trying to build hype rather than dog on his competition. dude is marketing himself pretty well and makes some amusing tiktoks. not a bad thing to have a little beef. this is better than 4:12 milers or whatever at OREGON talking crap to centro on instagram lol.
It’s funny because now when Simeon loses in college he’s going to be clowned on. Why do these kids not realize the incessant trash talk just leads to worst things for them in the future.
