After the worst WC in history at #Oregon22 last year I doubt if Phoenix wants to deal with the High School Athletic Director caliber people like Seb Coe and Max Sigel.
I say keep the Olympics and worlds away from the United States. Visa issues, uninformed/unenthusiastic (some would say 'ignorant') public, insular jingoistic coverage, spectre of gun violence ... anywhere but there.
You literally can't live in Phoenix without owning a car. That's how poorly planned it is.
No public transportation (USA!) + need to drive everywhere = epic tourism fail
Obviously it would be crazy to host the Olympics in Phoenix because of the weather. But that would be the only reason. Phoenix can absolutely handle tourism. It’s a huge part of the economy November-April.
This year we hosted the Super Bowl and the Phoenix Open in the same weekend. We’re part of the NCAA Final Four and BCS playoff game rotations too. Busses + light rail + taxis + Uber/Lyft + car rentals = lots of options for getting around. Plus we have world class restaurants, resorts and hotels.
I'm not sure if this is practical. Phoenix is known for its very hot and dry climate, especially in summer. It may be too hard for the athletes and spectators. So I think the Phoenix Summer Olympics are unlikely in the near future.
Arizona officials announced Thursday the state will no longer grant certifications for new developments within the Phoenix area, as groundwater rapidly disappears amid years of water overuse and climate change-driven drought.
