Nobody has justified why non-binary should get equal prize money. The Runners World story hints that it is discriminatory that non-binary people can't earn the same money, but it also points out that non-binary is not considered an elite category by some race directors.
They would actually have larger competitions if they included a left-handed category, or a LGBTQ category, two categories that could be justified by natural human traits. Could the left-handed people claim that they deserve equal prize money, based on larger numbers?
It is great that they are creating a non-binary category for people who do not want to sign up as male or female. But they only exist because it is a box to check on the race form, not because they are a major category that we should be paying to compete.
Has anyone ever tried to explain why this tiny category deserves equal prize money, while LGBTQ, a much larger category, isn't even recognized? Or the race form box could be "LGBTQ/non-binary", then that might justify providing prize money.
