Florida without a doubt because they have this delusion that they are somehow better than the other backwoods southern states. Any state that can elect a culture war governor like them is pretty worthless. At least the increased frequency and intensity of hurricanes is making for fun watching
Your life isn't miserable because of anything going on in Florida.
I've lived in Ga and Alabama. The north Ga mtns are nice. Birmingham and Huntsville are alright in Al. I think Florida is generally a place for old folks and misfits who couldn't make it somewhere else. Tennessee has some redeeming qualities. SC Arkansas and Mississippi are meh. Any southern state can be a good place to live, until you need to raise kids.
Parts of VA and NC are southern, whether they like it or not! Way different kind of South than Mississippi though. By rank I'd go with Tenn, NC, GA, AL, FL, Ark, Miss. I grade on scenery pretty much.

Parts of Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania are “southern” too. At least they have an affinity for the confederate flag. “Southern” is a political view not a geographic region. There’s “southern” people everywhere.
WV is the prettiest but the sh*ttiest southern state. Just go there and you’ll understand.
I stayed at the Greenbriar hotel as a kid. It was my only time in WV. Beautiful country, great for hiking. The hotel was like old southern hospitality.
Keep in mind, this was 1986. I was a kid, I remember watching Jack Nicklaus win the Masters up in the hotel room.

It is probably more accurate to say "appalachian" instead of southern.
WV seceded from VA because they are against slavery.
Not exactly true. It played a part but it really had to do with congressional representation. The slave population counted for determining representatives in the state Congress and the large numbers of slaves in the east versus the small number in the west gave the eastern counties a controlling majority. It was a battle that had been brewing for many years. When they split, WV did not abolish slavery. However, in order to gain admission to the United States they could not be "pro-slavery," so they banned any new slaves from entering the state, but the existing slaves (admittedly a small number) were not freed.
