Jakob wasnt the best runner in those two races. And if things are just slightly off for him he might experience this several times the next few years.
Imagine this:
Jakob arrives at 3.28/29 shape. But, someone like Wightman who is faster is also in sub 3.30 shape. Jakob has to rabbit the whole race. Is really Jakob a clear favourite? We would never say so normally, we are just so used to him always being in top/close to top shape. But if someone faster is as well, he really has only one trick and that one can go wrong for several reasons.
If thats your argument, its pretty easy to make the argument he lost to an inferior runner each time. And then you gotta debate what an inferior runner is.
Yeah I think people are forgetting how legit Jake’s 1:43 800m/2:13.9 1k wheels are. You can never count out someone who can go sub 1:44 and sub 3:30 in a championship 1500m race. Kiprop, Mahkloufi, Coe, and Cram all did this and either won world or Olympic gold.
I do think Jakob is better than Jake but Jake is a threat especially in a race without pacers. Centro wasn’t better than half the field in Rio but he got the gold. Manzano got the silver despite being “worse” than a lot of the field in London. There are a lot of guys with sneaky good kicks that can beat “better” runners.
When you lose to someone he was better than you on the day. Wightman was better than Jakob when he beat him - however hard that is for Jakob to accept. Congratulating the winner and avoiding excuses is part of sportsmanship. But not always observed by those who can't accept they lost.
I can't fathom how I would make it through the day if I would be upset by the fact that the current olympic 1500 champion and 5000 world champion to be said they was a better runner.
Yes, the one with an olympic gold and european records is a better runner than the one without.
I also highly doubt how smart it would be that Jakob should toe the line in a championship thinking he is not better than everyone else, being not only content but happy with whatever placement.
Come on people. Do not be so scared by a sportsman saying he want to win. They all do.
Nothing about giving your competitor his due stops you from giving your best. But you prefer for the loser to say he is really better than the person who beat him and to come up with excuses for why he lost. You have shown that principles of sportsmanship have passed you by.

Wanting to win doesn't require saying you are better than the person who just beat you. Your opponent has just proven that sometimes you aren't.

Its very easy. Its the same as Timothy said he lost to an inferior runner in the olympics, which is a more fair argument than Jakob saying it about Wightman. BUT, how would Jakob react to that? In no doubt not at all positive. So....Why do the same.

If you were to race somebody in an event 10 times and win 6, you are the better runner in the event. Do you really think Wightman is better than Jakob at the 1500? Yes, Jake won a big race and deserves all due accolades for this, but he’s not better than Jakob. Have you ever truly listened to Jake or Hoare or any of the top guys talk about Jakob? They worship him, no kidding, and none of them think they are better. They hope this might change and yes, they might rarely beat him, but they basically they all concede it’s Jakob’s world right now and they are just living in it.

Imagine getting worked up by an imaginary scenario. I am 100% sure that Jakob would not start whining about that. As far as I can tell there is nothing but mutual respect between Ingebrigtsen and Wightman, its so weird that people need to construct these things. Its one of the best runners in the world saying he think he should have won. Wightman have no problems with it, you shouldn't either.
Since Jakob dares to be honest both his haters and his fans can't wait for his next race.
We should be happy he isn't the type to say "I am just so happy to be here, and I am incredibly happy for Wightman. He deserves to win, he is by far the best runner. I am just here to participate! For every treshold session I do there is just one thing on my mind: "having a pleasurable race and enjoy seing someone other than me winning". Sorry for taking silver, for the 5000 I will try to drink so much water there is no chance for me to win!".

The issue is not who is the better runner but the response of the loser to the winner. It has nothing to do with your opinion or those of other fans. His saying he is still the "better runner" is sour grapes. It is also false, as on that day he wasn't the better runner.

So you are dumb as well as being a poor sport. Congratulating someone who beat you doesn't require the drivel you have just posted.

I like Jake (cant help it being a Brit), but hat Wightman knew he would have a hard time repeating his Eugene performance is reflected in the rest of his season. Doesn't race the 1500m at Europeans, doesn't race vs Jakob in Lausanne, meaning he can't qualify to race Jakob in Zurich. That's three opportunities to stamp his authority on the discipline and really rattle Jakob and instead he messes about vs Garcia, Arop, and Korir in the 800
Pretty obvious case of ducking to me.
Jake ducked and ducked... all the way to an 800 m PB of 1:43.65 at Brussels in September 2022. Quack quack. I am reminded of the claims that Said Aouita ducked the 1500 m competition at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984, though he won the Olympic 5000 m gold medal maybe 30 minutes after Seb Coe won the 1500 m gold.

Ok, I realize it’s semantics, but I’m bored, so I’ll argue with you for one more post. Jakob was and is a better 1500 m runner than Wightman, on that day in Eugene and every day before and since. Occasionally the better runner loses. When Jakob states he’s better, it’s just the fact. You don’t like it because it violates some code of politeness, and you label it sour grapes, but I think it’s refreshing that Jakob just calls it like it is win, lose or draw. If you’d ask Jake on the day of his victory, he’d 100% agree that Jakob is better, but on that particular day he snatched the victory. Good for him.

Stating you're the better athlete than the person who has just beaten you is lousy sportsmanship. But it doesn't surprise me that posters here don't get that.
We should give the gold medal to Jakob because, after all, he is the better runner. In fact, places on the podium should be dictated by the losers and what their fans think.
