When is the next time Plainfield South will be facing Hinsdale Central?
Downers grove north finished 3rd at state last year. They may have lost their 1-2-3 but the returners have stepped up and they seem to be finding people from last year’s JV to help them out.
I think they are just as good this year as last year. Don’t forget that this team made NXN in 2016 and did really well there in 2017.
From an outsider, what has happened to the York boys?
Well, legendary Coach Newton retired and passed away a few years ago so they are under coach Kern now. He used to be their assistant coach.
They seem to be doing OK considering in 2017 they had 6 seniors on varsity, and in 2018 they improved from that year, almost making it to NXN without of senior. They qualified for NXN for the first time in forever in 2019.
The last few years, York has consisted of senior - heavy teams so it’s kinda hard to improve off of that the following years.
last year, they got 8th at state but I expected them to do better because Ethan Summer was their last runner which he shouldn’t have been. He was their top nonsenior in 2020.
I think York could have gotten second (behind nationally-ranked St Charles East) in 2020 if everyone was healthy and on that day. Or maybe even a first state title in forever. Health problems happen to a lot of people. Gotta give credit to St Charles East though.
This year they aren’t as good as they used to be because there is only 1 varsity returner. And they got 8th at state last year. But they have a nice pack of 5 seniors. Also a nice freshman-sophomore class. 2 of those guys should jump in the top 7. Hopefully those underclassmen keep York from falling off a cliff next year, and in 2024 they could maybe win state.
I actually wouldn’t be surprised if those underclassmen step up and York has a good team next year because people make much bigger jumps from freshman to sophomore year and sophomore to junior year than from junior to senior year, unless they don’t start caring about the sport until senior year.
Does anyone else here think that Tony Jone's is a bit off?
One thing that jumps out is that I think Plainfield south is looking better than Hinsdale Central. PS has 7 guys better than HC’s #4. HC also needs a #5 to step up. I’d like to know the next time they go head to head. HC lost 3 varsity guys from last year.
I think it’s suspicious to not have Lukas Verzbicas’s former team in the top 25. They won last year and returned 4 guys and there’s a sophomore looking to maybe close the gap. What else does a team need to be in the top 25? But where exactly in the top 25, that is the question.
York is not a team to take out of the rankings, they reloaded well enough to put them higher than 25th actually. They are 18th based on 3 mile times.

I found something weird here.
Micah Wilson still in these results, and Jed Wilson running jv
They haven’t fallen off that bad, and I have no doubt in my mind that Charlie Kern is a phenomenal coach. He lead the summer program for a long time (not sure how long) before taking over as head coach.
That being said, they have fallen off a bit and I don’t think anyone is going to like my reason for why. When it comes to cross country programs, some amount of “cult” is good. Cultiness is inspirational. A very strong binding force for team success. But a cult needs an inspiring charismatic cult leader, and Joe Newton had a lot of that in him. North Central (and kinda Newbury Park) is/was the same way. With Joe Newton as your coach, there’s just a little extra importance. You want to impress him.
The team is probably running the same workouts, or similar workouts, as they always have, but attitude and a strong driving motivational force matters a lot. You can’t win 5-6 titles in a row multiple times without it in my opinion. York has been reduced to just a really good program instead of maybe the best one. Sorry if this offends anyone. I do not mean it to be. I think Joe and Al are some of the best coaches of all time.
Rankings look a lot better than last time, but I’m still surprised that Sandburg isn’t on there
What is with this benchmark of 16:00 for 3 miles assuming this is Detweiller which is actually short of 3 miles by about 10 seconds? That's JV level, 10:40 at 2 miles...I'd say a team that wants to crack top ten needs at least 4 guys under 15:30 and the 5th at 16:00 AT WORST. 16:00 puts you around 140th place. Jesus the girls winner can run 16:00 a boys team should be ashamed if even one of their guys runs that.

Absolutely horrendous take by Newman here. DGN isn’t even in the same league as Plainfield South right now. Low stick running low 14:20s AND 4 under 15:01 in SEPTEMBER, they’re my pick to win state by a mile
DGN lost to Plainfield South by only 23 points.

I still think Plainfield South is better than Hinsdale Central though.

After FTTF I think it's clear that Plainfield South is the best team in the State. All they're missing right now is a 5th man, but then again that St. Charles East team didn't really have a developed 5th man 2 years ago and they were still the best team in the State by far. DGN is a good contender for 3rd but I think HC is still better. One things for sure though; WSC Silver will be a good meet this year.
WWS is a hungry team. Some of these guys remember that NXN team from their freshman year and they want it back. Word on the street is that this is Kuntz's last year so they want to make this year special, and I think they'll only be trending upwards in coming weeks.

He originally had DGN behind PS but moved them ahead after DGN won their first invite with a low score. However I think that meet was misleading because DGN had no competition and it was only a six team meet.
