Jakob saw how stacked his heat was and kept the pace slow enough to knock out at least two of the contenders, although it almost backfired because he was only 1/4s from being knocked out himself. Hoare and Tefera suffered from this, though the latter doesn't do outdoors as well as indoors. The real question in my mind is how they could put all of the top contenders other than Kipsang and perhaps Wightman in the same heat. That was absurd. They have to re-think how they set the semifinals because there is already a big advantage from running the second semifinal knowing the time to beat from the first. In soccer they actually play the games simultaneously where manipulation of next round results might take place if they know the results of the other games. Of course, even if you hide the 2nd heat runners under the stadium with no devices until it's time to compete, someone in the stands could always signal them or shout the time to beat and having them split off to two different stadiums for their races is logistically unwieldy.
I don´t think cares about knocking out any competitors. He merely - as always - to try qualify for the finale as easy as possible. On the contrary Jakob possibly wants to compete against in the big finals.
Jakob wasn´t close to knocking himself out. He could have run much if necessary, also in the last 50 meters. But watch how he always is looking around to make sure nobody is challenging his "Q".
If Jakob - as he looks like - is at his very best he is the man to beat in the final. Only realistic contenders seem to be Kipsang, Kerr and Timothy (in that order) and only if they are at their VERY, VERY best.

Really good point! Which is why if Tefera wasn’t in the race Olli would’ve made it. Tefera was on Jakob’s shoulder (trying to push him off the track) which is where Olli planned/likes to be. He had no idea what to do when that spot wasn’t available to him.
I mean to some degree this is a thing you could say. But Tim was dealing with the exact same stuff and made his moves more intelligently and purposefully. He was able to look around and cruise the last 100. Truth be told, Olli had several chances to take the lead and control it or drop back and be content to conserve energy. Instead he seemed obsessed with being in second place, which is only something to worry about in the last 400 meters (and that's only if you don't believe in your kick).
+ 1
Ollie made the same mistakes as Centro did in the semifinal in Tokyo:
He wasted energy by going forwards when he was pushed back instead of settling down in lane 1 and waiting for the finish.
Hoare wasn't overraced compared to NCAA's. Jakob ran 3:49 at Pre--testing out the world's track--and 3:47 in Oslo. No major difference there. Hoare got bad luck being in the heat of death and didn't do anything to make his own luck such as making the heat fast enough to get more qualifiers. It's not as if everyone was killed by faster heats in Tokyo last year.
hes raced a lot the whole time hes been under dathan and never seemed to hold him back before since he has been a consistent force for a few years. i figured his problem was his ceiling, which seems to be around the 332 range. not nearly fast enough to medal anyway.
Ollie´s 3:47.48 mile in Oslo converts to a 1500m in 3:30.63 !

Looks pretty accurate compared with 3:30.12 today.
