I think 1500 would have been tough, but not a sure thing either way. Even if she got the lead and ran like she did at ACCs no guarantee that Vissa or DeGenero would not have been there and beat her to the finish. My guess is she runs 5000 .

1500 would be a coin toss, but I would have bet on Tuohy. However, she would not be the 5000m champion if Waymant ran in the race. Tuohy was not feeling well and she just crushed the 3K college record, 5th fastest American ever in the event, and 8th best in the world presently. And she is a very experienced racer. Waymant is the best distance runner in the NCAA right now. That 3K race she ran was none other than mind blowing!!!!! That was Hayward magic

As a fan I cannot recall many NCAA wins as satisfying as Tuohy’s. She is an exemplary athlete, modest, poised, hard working, and should receive nothing but praise for what she accomplished yesterday. She was a teen phenom, had to suffer the crushing weight of hype, overcome some athletic adversity and the slings and arrows of so many doubters, and through it all she grinded on, persisted, got stronger and it all led to this win. She did this firmly embedded in a team concept. It’s clear she’s loved by her teammates and she’s loves them. Whatever the future holds for her as a distance runner, she should be held up already as a role model for young athletes.

imagine Parker Valby transferring to NC state. They would for sure be powerhouses in distance and would give katelyn a worthy training partner to push her to new heights. Im not familiar with any recruits NC state have coming in. Could someone spread some enlightenment on them?

There are rumors about an inbound transfer but it is not Valby. Grace Hartman is probably their top F recruit this year. 2:11/4:47/10:35

Any serious distance runner doesn’t need a teammate to push them. Actually, it’s a bad thing if they’re too competitive in interval training as it could lead to burnout.

exactly, and with Valby the way she trains seems to be very different from how Tuohy trains
Lost in the well-deserved praise for Valby's performances at SECs and NCAAs is how poorly she's been managed by Solinsky this year. It's really irresponsible to patch such a talented athlete together after a serious injury and milk them for points, especially as an underclassman. If this BTC pedal to the floor approach continues, her development over the next four years will not be commensurate with what her talent deserves.
Exactly. One of the most satisfying wins I ever saw. I mean the largest newspaper in the country had a story saying she would fall the victim of some biological curse and was doomed to not progress. About a 16 year old high school kid. This sport is tough enough, but then you throw in the injury, the crazy expectations (both good and bad), the doubts, the way any stumble along the way was inexorably interpreted as a sign of decline. Just a really mentally tough kid.

Could KT get by on only two days of running per week?

Sports is sports, and winning and losing is generally nothing more or less. It does not say anything about the virtue of the athlete or the team if they win or lose. However, once in a while, the victory is about something more, a “moral” victory of sorts. This term is used frivolously and way to often, but in Tuohy’s case, I think it applies.

Oh ok i didn't know that I assumed competition was good but thats a valid point you made regarding possible burnout. I still think it would be dope amd probably situations could be managed by constructive coaching that wouldn’t allow them to seriously throw down in practice. But you cant deny it would bring a strong culture of championship running to already phenomenal team.

Is this fair? She only ran the 5K at nationals right? And for someone good enough to finish runner up as a freshman, I think it would be a wasted opportunity to bench her.
I do worry about the points thing for track and field though. Treating t and f like a team sport has always been a distance runner's downfall.
