People who champion the free market love to complain that the government isn’t doing enough to control prices dictated by the free market.
Yeah because the US economy is anything but a free market, and if you think it is you have your head completely up your ass. The industries that the government has their hands in - such as energy and healthcare - are generally the least efficient and most expensive.
How? Nationalize the oil industry, remove the profit component, and sell at a loss like Venezuela?
Sell at a loss? Record profits yearly!! How about just quit gouging the public for profits that go into corporate nest eggs and of course politicians pockets.
How about we start by quit using taxpayer money ($80 BILLION a year) to subsidize big energy's profits. $80 billion can go a long way toward lowering the prices at the pumps, don't you think?

Honestly, the oil industry is such a friggin joke. They're entirely dependent on the government, either via subsidies or cheap leases on federal land (that we, the taxpayer own). They want government to take away people's land so that pipelines can be built, and supported by government dollars.
Now of course, they're unwilling/unable to actually ramp up production, either because they took production offline due to a tiny (1 year?) downturn caused by covid, OR, they want to keep prices unnaturally high to make exorbitant profits, and cause Dems to lose bigly in November, ushering in a Republican Congress that will be more than happy give them even more government dollars and government land. Said Republicans will also roll back CAFE standards, as they always do, cut any support for renewables (because it's ok for the oil companies to feed at the government trough but not solar/wind), etc. And the losers? All the rest of us. Sell your TSLA and buy Exxon and Shell, I guess.
$6.00? That's a whole different ball game. That would completely ruin my summer plans 🙁
I know the right wingers on here will have the vein in their forehead pop when they hear this, but ever think of biking for your shorter, more inconsequential trips? I'm saving a lot of money doing this. Instead of taking a gas guzzler everywhere and then going home devastated when gas prices inevitably violently rise from time to time, maybe compromise and get a bike. I promise it's not something the libs will snicker at you for doing.
People with families can't ride their ten speed to the grocery store.
People who live in rural areas don't want to ride their bike 40 miles to go to the store.

Exxon's profit margin is 8%.
Apple's profit margin is 25%.
BP's profit margin has been under 3% for most of the last decade.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Then don’t live 40 miles from a store, or, if you do decide to live 40 miles from a store, buy a car that gets 50+ MPG.
I've been sleeping in my car/ camping at the job site to save on gas and car mileage and rent too I guess. It's anywhere from 40 to an hour 15 minute drive one way to job sites. This is my solution it works for me. Because fuel prices ar high though, everything is high. I got a 20 percent raise this year and still feel just as broke when I was a first year apprentice. I'll manage either way but it's not good.
Biden and the lib a-holes do not care in the slightest how much this makes people suffer. Just look at he posts on this thread from the liberals jackazzes, completely uncaring about those struggling to feed their families and get to work, especially the lower income people. The only good that will come from this is that democrats screwed up EVERYTHING so much that they will lose Congress and the Presidency hopefully for decades.
Agree with this.
I don't like the high gas prices but the way around it is to network and get a second or third job to beat inflation. I am doing freelance writing from home to help with costs. I have a '14.5 Camry but may trade that in as long as gas is high ($4.79 in Columbus).

Copied from a 15 second search:
Exxon doubles profits from last year to $5.48 billion At the end of April, Exxon Mobil reported $5.48 billion in profits during the first quarter of 2022 – also more than doubling its profits compared with the same period last year.

BP records $6.2 billion profit.May 7, 2022
My 15 second search results shows peaks and valleys but current profit levels still below 2010 to 2014 by a lot.
Are you aware that your list (Millions of US $) is actually BILLIONS. It takes a thousand millions to equal one billion. Sort of an error wouldn't you say?
Do they really need $80 billion in yearly subsidies with those profits? And while I blame one party more than the other due to how much they receive in campaign contributions, I do blame both parties.
The prices are soaring world wide, but apparently it is something Biden is doing to cause it? Yet the energy companies profits are soaring. Please connect those dots.
The fact of the matter is that Katie Porter presented a bill to stop price gouging and the GOP rejected it. The public tunes in to Johnny Depp trials and let's this stuff go without a whimper.

If you replace comma with a period, number transforms from million of US $ to Billions of US Dollars. Happy now?

I was responding to a post that was implying that gas companies profits were minor. I showed where they have DOUBLED since last year. Greed is the reason for high gas prices throughout the world, not anything the current president of one country has done, outside of Putin.
Honestly, I am not sure why you posted the list of profits from the last 13 years? Doesn't your list show that raising prices to their current level is gouging the American public? $50-110 Billion dollars per year profits are not enough? Using taxpayer money to toss in another $80 billion across the companies is really needed?
Why would the GOP turn down a bill to limit gouging? There seems to be a pretty prevalent color in the chart showing where the contributions to, although Manchin is the single biggest recipient.

What would you like anyone to do? Their profits are up because the cost of their product is up while they are producing it as fast as they can. Are you also aware that for most of the last decade, the globe was awash in excess oil? Those days will return and any massive investment in new oil may not pay off. Also, its refining capacity as much as crude production. Drillers could double output and it would have nowhere to go. What we need is modernized refining facilities and capacity. That will take a decade and nobody wants to put up the billions to build a refinery.
