I was interested if a freshman boy has ever won a highschool state meet. I know it has happened before on the girls side, although girls have normaly reached maturity earlier. Does anybody have answers???
I'm pretty sure Paul Roberts won xc, 3200, 1600 his freshman year...and every other year in 2a Colorado just a few years back.
Freshman Jason Maschmeyer, Churchill HS, ran 8:40.7 to win the large school 3000m in OR in 1990. He was 23rd out of 32 at Footlocker as a sophomore.
Maschmeyer was a interesting cat! I was running against him in high school. Well, running behind him I should say. Supremely talented but strangely inconsistent.
Depends what state meet. Keegan smith of Knoxville catholic in Tennessee was a state champ in the 1600 this year. I’m sure it’s happened more than a few times in some of the smaller states. Big states like Texas? Not sure. I dont think there has never been a male freshman individual state champion in California, but I could definitely be wrong about that.
Do people consider it a state title when you win the class/division based on school size? I don’t. In fact I won one of those but don’t consider myself a state champion because I didn’t win the meet where the classes come together.
I guess I would consider it if you don’t have that final meet, then sure, you’ve won the biggest meet you can in your state. Still feels weird to have multiple state champs in the same event though. Champion feels like a singular title.
It happens in track all the time...pretty rare in cross country, though. Mark Johnson, of Mason City, is the only one from my state, Iowa, to have done it. At the time, in the early 1970's, he was the only four time state cross country champion in U.S. high school history. I'm sure it has been done several times since then, though.

This has my vote for Most Impressive, for field events anyway. Very technical event. It's California. Took second the next two years and then got kicked out of school his senior year so nothing in 2011.

It is extremely impressive. I know the guy who got 4th, who was a senior. Went on to have a big career at USC playing football after only going there for track. He said it was one of the most ridiculous athletic feats he's ever seen. This coming from a professional football player (CFL not NFL) mind you.
