This board so full of old, bitter, out of touch losers. Neither Cooper's nor Jakob's responses are serious. It's banter for christ's sake. As the old adage goes, "It's not that deep"
I swear I'm losing more and more braincells everyday I come back to this website.
It's easy to mistake the irony of your basic self-deprecating, American white middle-class male if you are not from this culture. Cooper's making light of the fact that while he was in the race, he was not in the race (13:18 at 400m to go). It's also notable how far Cooper Teare has come since that day four years ago. He is now a 3:50 indoor miler (converts to 3:33) with an easy 13:06 5000m pr. He's also run 1:47 for 800m as part of a double. He's within three seconds of Jakob's mile pr. He's now also within 20 seconds of his 5000m pr. He's still not a rival, but he's closed so much of the gap that it has become a possibility at least, if still distant other than in early season races. He might run 3:48 this year. And the thing is that I and probably many others figured Cooper for a pro already based on a workout they showed back when he was in high school. Even when he's almost being lapped in that 2018 World Junior race, you can look at his form and see the potential. So, no, there's no rivalry and never has been and he knows that, but he's now at the level where he may make World finals and maybe even start to figure a bit in the results in the next few years.
While (obviously) Jakob is the better 1500m runner, I do think that Cooper Teare will be Jakobs biggest threat this weekend.
Hocker finished 6th in the Olympics and Teare has been ahead of Hocker all season. Cheriyout is just starting his season I believe too. I predict it goes Jakob 1 and Teare 2.
You think the guy who couldn't even make the Olympics is the biggest threat to the Olympic champion? That's seriously the take you are going with? Have you seen the disparity in their PRs? Have you seen Teare compete in anything not a college event? He couldn't even beat Woody in the trials.
Yes. Teare made the mistake of running the 5000 meters at the Olympic trials last year. If he had gone with his stronger event (1500m) I’m confident he would have made the team. The 5000m team last year was super strong for USA. Chelimo, who barely beat Teare, won a medal and Fisher was 5th in the 10k.
I think by July Teare is about 10th in the world for 1500 meters, but right now I think he may be top 3 in the world.
Remember when Hocker prodded Centro with a joke about it being "his move," back when Centro thought he was a nobody? Don't brush Teare off too quickly, Jakob! :)
The distance between Teare and Ingebrigtsen is greater than it was between Centro and Hocker, lol.
