Quick fun fact for anyone interested in some XC history: Mitch Kingery still has another (probably stronger) 49 year old record from the year after he ran the 2:23 marathon.
Anyone who ran high school XC for a school along California’s central coast between Monterey and Napa in the last 40 years knows about Kingery. His name is splashed all over the record books of Crystal Springs, which is one of the two XC courses in the region that every single single kid will run (and most kids will dread — 2.95 miles of hills, sharp turns, and dust, an awful start that takes out at least a few runners each race, and a steady uphill climb full of switchbacks to the finish). I’d guess a couple thousand people race it every year — and some very good runners have come out of the central coast — but Kingery’s 14:28 is the best mark ever run.
Huge props to Tim for his marathon. Breaking one of Kingery’s records is special.
