When exactly was the last time the US even hosted worlds? It's a marquee and global event.
A marquee and global event held in a podunk little town... Idiotic.
That is why Eugene finagled their way into getting awarded the World Championships without going through the bidding process. In a bid against several other world class cities they wouldn't have gotten it.
Also, a World Championship stadium is required to have at least 30,000 seats, and this stadium probably won't even have 20,000 seats. Plus there aren't enough hotel rooms in Eugene which is making the hotel prices sky high.
So many things wrong with having the World Championships in Eugene.
It was worth it to me to pay for decent (not great) seats for myself and my family for almost all evening sessions. Was it a big credit card bill? Absolutely. Will there be another World Champs within driving distance of where I live? Don't know.
By living near Eugene you eliminated a huge cost that most people would have, which is you don't have to pay $400 per night for a hotel room. Not to mention no airfare and no rental car. So you'll actually be paying a lot less than most other people.
I am staying a bit outside of town in a cool house for about $100/night. It will require a little drive in each day, but ok

....and I've got an Airbnb for just under $200/night right on Villard, one block from the Wild Duck, 2 blocks from Hayward.
How much is a ticket to only one playoff game (3 hours) in the first round of the MLB playoffs? Looks like the cheapest tickets are about $100 for just one game, good seats are $400-$1k depending on who's playing. And then even more for the world series, which is more the equivalent of the world championships. MLB world series starts at $300 for a 3 hour game and good seats can be thousands of dollars per game.
$100 to get in for a session at the world championships sounds about right.
Then how about paying the athletes at least the MLB minimum for performing.
Ugh. That's so slow. No value whatsoever. $95 to $125 is cheaper than an entry fee to use to bribe the Sanitation, Fire and Police Unions at big US marathons. Around the same price as Disney World in the middle of the Summer.
