My life as a post collegiate runner. Part time job at some sports store. Getting in my training runs then in the evening I was a bar back. Average paycheck was a hard earned $400 bucks every 2 weeks. That was combined with my other roommate that was living the dream with me. We would travel to our races together trying to fork up enough extra dough for our extravagant motel room. Occasionally my small sponsorship with Brooks shoes that allowed me a gear stipend of about $2000 a year would fork up the travel pay. Worked my but off trying to break the 4:00 mile, got close enough that a sneeze would have landed me a 3:59.99. I eventually woke up one day and said F-This I am done. I went out got into a career 14 years later I am married Make $200K and my wife makes $80k and have a good life honestly because I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Chasing the running dream became a waste of time. I started realizing I can enjoy running and fitness without needing to kill myself to do it. My roommate kept chasing the dream which did not amount too nothing for him he wound up running 14:18 for a 5000m and 29:50 for a 10,000m and something like 8:55 for the 3000m steeplechase. He eventually got tired of running and moved on to cross fit. Now he is so far behind the bubble he has done nothing but work the stupid jobs when did when we were roommates. He was telling me hey I want to settle down and don't want to work for something like $50k how do I get into your line of work? He does not understand that my line of work started when I said F-This I am done and began climbing the corporate ladder. A lot of guys that are in the heat of the moment are not going to understand that there is more out there then some race to run. Eventually you will move on and realize things like Las Vegas, travel, and being able to afford nice things is far better. The word stability is a lot better then chasing the track dream.
My Guess is Aric runs for fun and does not care about chasing the Olympics laughing at him about it is pretty funny considering with his name and blood line I am sure he has a few million in a bag from simply having the name Van Halen associated with him. Money might not matter to you right now but someday you will hang up your running shoes find yourself a lady that you want to keep but don't really know how to make her feel comfortable. This brings me to the above you will be in Vegas walking around wander into a high limit room out of curiosity and see a slot machine that has a denominator of $1,000 a pull and wonder who the heck can afford that? Well people like Aric can and people that can make the lady you are with feel secure can. Money might not matter too you right now but when you don't have running anymore you will want something to keep you entertained and entertainment cost money and if you don't have it you will simply be a drunk or drug addict ex runner.
