Statements like that when people go pro are statements that I don't understand How do we know he or Cain would have been any better if they went to college? They at least got paid.
Dude got a minimum of $2.5 million. 10 years 250k per year.
Such a BAD "prove a negative" take! As if these two are exceptions to the rule of US distance runners going pro out of high school, rather than proving the rule, and as if getting paid is the only or main point.
I said it on another thread a couple of weeks ago and I’ll say it again. Drew Hunter is the most overrated American distance runner in the last 10 years.
Wasn’t Drew a pretty high volume guy in high school? I mean, some guys who run well in high school approach their peaks very early. Hunter is still plenty young, but his PRs of 3:35.9 and 13:17.5 are still very good and, perhaps, very close to his potential.
The 5k is rapidly changing in the USA. With the talent in the pipeline, it's going to take sub 1255 talent to make teams going forward.
Hunter might be capable of it; I presume his PR is in non super shoes. The question is whether he has the fire to push to his max or is he just milking the remnants of his contract. Also, he has to stay healthy.
His recent PR in 3k tells me that if he stays healthy, he can drop 10 seconds off his PR this year. The question is if he can find another 10 seconds in the rest of his career.
Once again, Rojo is correct. If you can make millions before you are 28-29 you should. Like I have said step in some hole in College XC sit out a year, there goes that deal, while someone comes up from a year or two behind you to gobble up that money.

He did not PR in the 3k. His PR is 7:39 from a few years ago.
He needs to get a real coach, not his mom. He's such a brat that no good coach wants to work with him.
By the way, maybe he is not at the top of the top and may never be, but.. it;s not like he never improved.
3:35.x
7:39.x
13:17
Are pretty solid marks, there was no guarantee coming out of HS that he would ever even hit these.
LOL- awesome. So adidas threw $2.5M at a kid and didn’t really expected much out of him? So he might as well have taken it? Is that what we’re going with now?
The most rationalized career in American distance running history continues.

Yeah, not sure how Adidas tolerates his coaching situation. But I guess it's their money. If I was hunter I'd want the best coach available, he can't possibly think his mom is that coach. He's not serious enough at this point, I think he's milking his contract.

^^^this = not high expectations. You and I both know that adidas did, in fact, consider those times to be virtually guaranteed at this point in his contract. Otherwise why make the deal at all?
Agreed- it hasn’t worked out as planned at this point.

That's very optimistic. You'll still have 13:05 guys making the US team for World's/Olympics. Sub-13 performances will continue to be rare in the US
