My theory: the plated shoes have changed the game where it comes to how much intensity can be done while also hitting high mileage. The thing missing from this thread is intensity piece, and platted shoes allow for tons of intensity without the wear and tear…
Update: 7:46 won’t make Nationals. That’s insane. The fastest time last year was Teare at 7:46.1 and he wouldn’t even make the meet. Top returner Mario Garcia Romo has run 7:47. He ran 7:48 last year and got third behind Hocker and Teare. He won’t make the meet this year in the 3,000m (he will be anchoring the DMR).

It's pretty funny to see people trying to suggest the shoes have no effect. They were the same people in the 90s and early 2000s that thought Lance was clean too.
Read again what the fellow above is saying. The fastest time last year won't even get you into the meet this year.
It could very well be that Jakob and Tim are 330 guys in spikes from 2015, which is potentially why no one will be breaking 3:26 this year, because quite frankly, no one is around that is naturally 3:28 talented or is full gas doping on EPO.

…and 13:28.00 (last year’s top qualifying time) also doesn’t make top 16 this year. Furthermore, 87 guys have a sub 4 qualifying time (the day is not over)

If that’s the case then performances will improve year after year for the next 8 years (as people get to build a bigger and bigger base) even without further shoe improvement.
Kind of what goggles allowed in swimming. People were now able to train a lot more without going blind (over years).

What? They all had the shoes last year too, torpedoing your argument.
I didn't see that same trend in D3 when I looked several weeks ago, so I dispute the premise here. Maybe there are a lot more very fast D1 times because there are a lot more setup races with pacers than there used to be.
Hocker would have run faster than 7:46 last year if it were necessary. Remember that he closed in 25.6 or so to win nationals in 7:46 last year. That indicates mid to high 7:30s shape at worst.
Thanks. Holy crap he squeaked in. 26th but 10 scratches ahead of him. Happy he’s in though.
I don’t know how we could have predicted all these scratches in the mile.
NAU: Nico and Nur doing 5000m/3000m double. Obvious (2 scratches)
ND: Nuguse better at 3000m than mile. Their DMR have a chance at a medal (win?). Obvious scratch (1 scratch)
Hamilton better at 3000m than mile. But no way he has ability to do both. Scratches mile which comes first. Predictable.
Maier only ranked 24th in the mile, but OK State have a chance at medal in DMR (ranked 5th). Also hoping that he would make it in the 3000m, where he is ranked 20th. Not obvious, but could have been predictable.
Dolan: Better at 800m (14th) than mile (21st). However, he is not a favourite to make it in the final in either. Maybe he could have thought that he would do better in a tactical mile (given his speed) than in the 800m. However, what if he did not make it in the mile (he was only 21st) and scratched the 800m where he had a spot. Too risky. Scratch.
But 4 Washington scratches in the mile? I assume that Elliott who scratched the 800m (and is not one of the 4) will run the 800m leg. What are the 2 other Washington runners going to do? Injured?
