Mondo is so good that he could easily make the U.S. team in virtually every competition while jumping a full foot under his best. Besides, if you're a pole vaulter, you are used to taking some risks for the big payoff.
So does Mondo have to pay taxes in Sweden and the us?
So insane even Duplantis family said this played a role. Do your research.
There are a lot of videos about this, from Duplantis side and from Sweden federation side.
And even if he didn't mention it (he did) it's the best choice to do. Everyone has bad days, injuries... no one would waste 4 years if their lives (and a lot of money) because they had a bad they if they had a choice. Simple as .
And yet there's never been anyone close to Mondo from the USA. Not even close. Maybe Sam Kendricks on his best day of his career.
I was a fan of his dads but it does seem a little off-if sweden is so awesome and mom and dad are so pro swedish, why didn't he go to hs and college there? I mean they must have some really bad ass hs and college track programs there.
US pole vaulters get big endorsements like doing extremely awkward commercial for Nutrilite, like Jenn Suhr did. Mondo will probably have a cheap bookcase at Ikea named after him.
But seriously, it would be fun to see a detailed analysis of Mondo's financial outcomes as a US citizen with a fairly decent level of sponsorship versus the cradle to grave benefits he will get as a Swedish citizen plus a more modest level of sponsorship for shilling popular brands of Lutefisk.

Most countries have tax treaties, so you get to deduct what you already paid in one country from the taxes you owe to the other, with where you made the money taking priority for taxation, so No.

I dont know if you are serious but there is no such thing as college (or hs) track programs in sweden. It doesnt work that way.

We don't know if he would have reached these heights if he remained competing for the US. His father said he thought Mondo had reached plateau some years ago.
Now imagine, he's having a bad moment in his career, some americans appear and steal his spot for a major international competition. Everything could fall apart from that point. The fact he had a guaranteed spot in all Intl. tournaments gave him stability and peace of mind to focus and improve his technique, not fight for a spot/worry about competition.
That's why big companies buy their competitors: competition is bad for you.

Only because she defeated the "evil russian", that's why she became famous for a little while. If she only won a gold medal no one would care, as they wouldn't care about Mondo and Gu had they stayed.
I wish he was on the US team. It was a great financial move for him to go to Sweden. Most of the Track and Field meets are in Europe so much less travel by living in Sweden. He is a Huge Fish in a very small pond competing for Sweden. He isn't in a premier event from an American perspective (typically sprints). Use American Ryan Crouser as an example World Record 2 Olympic Golds, 1 World Championship a lot of people haven't heard of him (present company excluded). Mondo would be big here (with the world records), but he is a Mega Super Star in Europe. Lastly, the Swedish Bikini Team.
He's basically like Naomi Osaka. Speaks enough Swedish to get by but is really from Louisiana. Recruited by Sweden early. More of a sure thing w/Sweden to make Olympic and World teams because they have selection discretion, not a trials system. He didn't end up needing that probably but I think it's working out for him.
He is Sweden's most popular athlete now, according to this. I just don't think he would get as much attention in America. And weirdly as an American, I enjoy cheering for him as a Swede/American/LSU kid more than if he were just wearing a USA uniform and from Shreveport.
I too enjoy him more because he's a Sweden/LSU hybrid. I guess it is odd to root for him more than our own pole vaulters, but maybe it's just fun to root for a smaller, benign-seeming country while also rooting for a kid from Louisiana.
I actually don't think Mondo would have the swagger he has if he represented the U.S. It's similar to Jakob, where they know everyone's looking at 'em cause they're household names somewhere. I think if he were an American pole vaulter, he could still win gold and be number one, but would have an unassuming aura knowing you're in an obscure sport that Americans don't care about even if you win gold. He'd have that attitude of all U.S. field and long-distance runners—just grateful to be there.
Geez, what if he only makes the equivalent of 10 million instead of 20 million in the US, how will he ever survive?
smerucans are greedy ducks, look at these pro sports athletes making 20-30 million per year, they have no idea what to do with it and have no need for it. But, they piss and moan if they don’t get it.

Is this Swedish fan fiction? He's been a world class vaulter since high school and has progressed steadily each year. There has never been a more obvious future world record holder than Mondo vaulting 5.90 at age 17.
My favorite TF&N thing is that Mondo's HSR is marked with the (') by Jack Shepard which he also did for Arrhenius in the Discus back in the early 2000s. Both Swedes were born and raised in the United States. Mondo's HS jump was also certified as the US Junior Record and is listed as the AJR by TF&N.
I'm just imagining Mondo breaking the world record to a deafening roar from an American crowd as the last act of the world championships... doing a standing front flip in celebration... kissing his smoke-show Swedish girlfriend... then going to bed thinking "damn I wonder what some distance runners on LetsRun think about my decision to represent Sweden."
US is one of the very few countries that do tax their overseas residents. That´s why some give up their American citizenship if they live permanently in another country (like Tina Turner). So yes, Duplantis pays taxes to both countries.
