You guys are huffing glue if you think Nuguse will make this olympic team. What has he shown in the last few years that he is capable of doing anything at the trials? He's like 5 seconds off the olympic standard anyway.
I picked places not the team. Nuguse has done some impressive things. 1500 NCAA title, running down Grant Fisher in the DMR for the win there. 1:48.29 800 FTW in 2019, 13:40 this year cruising to a win. Solo 3:55 mile in indoor 2020. Winning ACCs and 23rd at 10K in NCAA this fall. You put this all together a fast 1500 is coming, and he's more talented than Josh Thompson and some of the other contenders.
i should say this spring for NCAA cross, but either way he is strong as heck for a 1500 runner. He's got natural speed.
Anyone have Gwen making an olympic team? She's decently far off both the 5k and 10k PRs for some of the women competing, but she may have a good run because if she doesn't make the team this year her next shot is at the age of 38 and she will have to move up to the longer distances because there's no way she'll have the speed for the 5k & 10k.
It's good that she's back to running good times, but she has zero shot unfortunately. It's too deep a field right now and 15:05ish is no longer competitive.
I think y’all are forgetting a name in the Men’s 3k steeple: DYLAN MF HODGSON. Heard it here first.

I don't see how that follows. Those are great results for a college student, but they don't indicate that he's anywhere close to being top 3 in the 1500 at the Trials. His "talent" is fairly irrelevant if he hasn't matured enough to make use of it. Maybe he'll make the team in 2024. Not now.
Also in that DMR he actually split SLOWER than Fisher since he got the baton ahead of him. Fisher had to pass him, then Nuguse sat on him. I wouldn't take Nuguse in a true head to head with Fisher then, or now.
Nuguse is in the famed LRC "Real Racer Club" (President: Matt Centrowitz Jr.)
Some Criteria:
-Championship wins in slow times
-Doesn't run particularly fast outside of championship season
-Experience racing pros
-Experience beating people with faster PRs
-Championship wins in slow times (seriously, the slower the better)
Note: Nuguse has a great kick, but a fast kick does not guarantee you entry in to the "Real Racer" club. For example, Cole Hocker is firmly a time trialer regardless of how many times he closes 200m in 25 or 26. He runs fast times frequently, with his teammates, or with like, Mario Garcia Romo completely out of the race 60m behind him.
Why don't you think he is anywhere close to being top 3?

Why do you think he is close to being top 3? What indicates that he has that ability? I'd put Waleed Suliman from Ole Miss as having a better chance than Nuguse. Nuguse has looked like a very good college runner over the last few years, nothing more. Guys like Teare, Hocker, Grijalva have proven they have better chops than many pros with their time trialing and racing. Nuguse has looked fairly mediocre in comparison this year, only really running against other college kids.
Until Nuguse runs some seriously fast races or beats some serious pros, he's a non-factor.

I think he's probably only about 5th best but I certainly think he's in the conversation. Waleed Suiiman doesn't have a couple NCAA titles, and I've never seen him solo a 3:55 or 7:46. Many people think it is reasonable to expect he has improved from the 3:38 he ran two years ago as a 19 year-old, especially with the new spikes. He may be a non-factor in your book because he has only run one track race in the last 13 months, but others are able to project where he should reasonably be this summer.
It's not huffing glue to think a guy that won NCAAs as a sophomore should be in the mix at the trials two years later.
Waleed ran 3:36 over the weekend, when does he enter the conversation?

I’m aware - I followed the race. I think he has a solid chance to make the trials final.
He simply hasn't done enough to warrant his inclusion in this conversation. He hasn't proven he can race well against pros. He hasn't proven he can run fast times. I expect him to place ~10th. If he makes the finals.
He hasn’t done enough to be in your conversation. He’s done enough to be in many other conversations of people who have followed the sport.

By any objective metric he is not in the conversation for an Olympic spot. At all. I'm not sure what your fascination is with this guy.
Nuguse last 1500m. He ran 1:55.6 the last 800m.
https://dt8v5llb2dwhs.cloudfront.net/Indoor/2021/005-2-01.htmHocker dropped a 1:52.2 last 800m and ran a meet record. His 3:53 is equivalent to a 3:36.
Can Nuguse close that fast off a 2:00 min 800m?? Can anyone close like that in the U.S?

See this is what I'm talking about. Nuguse is a great COLLEGE RUNNER. But, in order to be a factor at the Olympics trial, you need to be able to outkick PROS.
A guy like Hocker is way more likely to be in the mix based on his ridiculous 3:50 mile time trial ability AND his insane closing speed and 1:46 800 speed. Nuguse has NONE of that going for him. I don't understand why people are still talking about him like he's a factor. He's just not there yet.

I certainly didn’t say that he’s better than Hocker. But I think he should be better this year than two years ago. And that would put him in the mix in the finals.

First of all, what indicates he's a better 1500m runner this year than last year? And second of all, how much better? If he starts crushing 3:35s and beating pros, then count him in. Otherwise, he's not challenging for any spots. That's just the truth. I'm sure he's a great guy and you want to see him succeed, but you have to be realistic. He hasn't raced a 1500m in two years!
