This is a good example of how basic stats don’t tell the whole story. Take a closer look at yesterday’s game:
1st quarter: Wilson holds on to the ball too long and gets sacked in the end zone for a Jets safety.
2nd half: Broncos went three and out on 4 of their first 5 drives, with a fumble two plays into the fifth drive, as the Jets took and then extended their lead. With the Jets having three consecutive scoring drives to start the second half, the Broncos desperately needed their highly paid quarterback to change the momentum or at least have an extended drive to give their defense some rest. He failed to deliver during that pivotal stretch.
Last 2 minutes of 4th quarter: after the Broncos defense comes up huge with an interception, the Broncos get the ball down 3 with a chance to win the game. Instead, Wilson fumbles the ball, and the Jets pick it up and take it the other way for a game-clinching touchdown.
Wilson’s mistakes cost the Broncos 9 points and hurt the team. Is he the only reason they lost? No. Did he do enough to help the team win? No.
