I do think the market goes higher into the July Fourth holiday, so I would scale in on a buy. I am looking at 3,950-4,050 to get aggressive on the short side.
funny thing about this inflation...I track every dollar I spend through Quicken so I can look at spending over time. You'd think that if inflation is 8%, my expenses would be up somewhere in that zone. But my expenses aren't up even close to that. In fact they are down.
N=1, and probably I've been holding back on spending because of the market downturn. And I only buy a tank of gas once per month or so so that's unusual for an Amurrican.
but still...it seems to me this inflation isn't rising prices on everything. At least in my case, this this particular inflation is apparently avoidable.
Have you gone to the grocery store lately? They don't raise prices to keep up with inflation. They think it is open season on price gouging. My protein power that I buy went up 60% in 6 months. I sometimes get a piece of chicken at Kroger. It has been $1.69 forever. Yesterday it was $2.79. Groceries and gas is where consumers are getting hammered.
Tech items are actually deflating. I check deals on Slickdeals every single day of my life. Stuff is noticeably down.
Clearly the stock market influences the big ticket spending of middle/upper middle class a lot too. My parents friends bought some expensive trip for the whole fam and grandkids to Disney because they “were up big” on some stocks back in December or so. Now they’re down because they never sold and might have to put the rest of it on the credit card.
I bet people have their summer trips booked from last year when everybody was up. Now and moving forward they’re gonna tighten up.
Maybe the Fed counts on how rates impact the markets to reduce how people spend their money that just “went down” since Dec

And measuring inflation is next to impossible and there are multiple ways to do it. It's an opinion, really. Esp in such a vast and regionalized economy such as the US.
Agreed on the wealth effect tho....a declined stock market has an immediate and direct effect on my spending, that's for sure. Which is what the Fed wants...lower asset prices to reduce demand and therefore inflation.

My family spend the same on groceries in 2022 as we did in 2020. A bucketton of money, but no different.
I dunno. I know my story is anecdote of course. I'm not saying there is no inflation. I'm just saying it seems avoidable for people in my situation.
That's a lie agip
No way you are spending the same amount on groceries as you did in 2020.
Maybe you are saying you have spent as much on groceries in the 1st six months of 2022 as you did in all of 2020?
absolutely. That's why I've said multiple times that this is just anecdote.
Your logic is peculiar. The other poster's anecdote was also clearly a personal anecdote, whether labelled as such or not. Were you sharing an anecdote just now with the intent to enrage us all, or do you maybe realize that personal anecdotes shouldn't get others worked up?
I think you could apologize to the poor fellow for your brittle response...

I don't remember the exact incident but I hear you.
