I will go on actual record saying that the decline is winding up. We are near a bottom. this is a total washout and what we get after total washouts is a rebound. Stocks have fallen too much and the bad news is priced in
OK, put that one on the list to check back at the end of the year.
I'm already on record suggesting that this decline still has fresh legs and a lot of room to run. I think we are probably half way to the bottom or less.
Shall we make some kind of friendly imaginary wager? :-)
Some voluntary amount to the other’s favorite charity? terms: sp500 is higher on July 16 2022 than it is at the close on June 16 2022.
LOL I have no problem with agip’s disposition, I just think he’s a deluded flake.
But I thought this was a financial thread, not a social club. I see I was incorrect, and my glancing blow to the thread is therefore now done, thank god LOL

I was thinking about the end of the year, but if you want to tighten this up to one month ahead, sure. I'll even offer 2:1 odds on that bet. I think that sp500 will be lower on 16 July than it ended today.
If I win, please pay $100 to a local charity that supports vulnerable street people wherever you live. Or work an equivalent shift in a shelter or food bank. Something in that vein as you see fit.
If you win, I'll cough up $200 (in my currency, whatever that is...) wherever you like. Maybe Trump's legal defense fund? ;-) Literally LOL this time...

Ima go with agip on this one, just moral support though no money.

ok sounds good.
I'd ask you to contribute to the Fistula Foundation, which helps poor new mothers recover from injury after giving birth.
this will sound uncharacteristically conspiratorial....but is there a way Russia could be shorting the US market every day? With some kind of levered bet that would actually move the needle?
I mean some of this stuff has never happened before, from what I'm reading. I don't know enough about the options world. Probably some kind of giant whale like that could not be hidden from the system.

it would be more in fashion of russian meddling to boost the markets, but create much suffering in the economy and mainstream America via the painful effects of inflation, and thereby create deep discord based on class and income, etc.
I'll call the bottom on the S&P for fun. Right below 3400. Based on what I've looked at, that would imply forward earnings and dividend growth being negative this year, flat next year, then a return to averages. The only time period of materially worse performance over a 3 year period was the worst part of the GFC and I don't foresee credit demand dropping anywhere near that far. Even the crush inflation period of the 70s held up better.
I bought some SPY today and will increase my exposure if we keep dropping from here. Feel like the market will remain volatile, but should fundamentally fall around 4000 by year end. Especially if core inflation goes on a downward trend to close the year.

Then hype the differences for all it was worth.
Hey SP. You might appreciate this more than most....I wanted to go see Paul McCartney's show...but I'm economizing because of the stock market fall so I didn't go. Not a huge fan of his current sound and band but just wanted to join together with the band.
yeah the russians do love that angle.
but I think right now they are trying to starve out the West with poverty and hunger...trying to create a wedge between the people and the politicians, so politicians feel they have to give ukraine to Putin or they'll be voted out. A crashing stock market would certainly help create that wedge.

Either carmine9/K5 etc has hacked your handle or you spent too much time high altitude training.

Sat is Paul McCartney's 80th Birthday; and tomorrow is the 50th anniversary of what event?

I looked it up. The first thing that came up for June 17 1972: "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" single by Little Jimmy Osmond peaks at #38. But that's probably not it.

Your response prompted me to check out The Billboard Top 100 for 6/17/1972, #1 was Sammy Davis Jr's "The Candy Man." You're probably too young to remember the Republican Convention in 72, but SDJ was a major performer and led the 4 more years chant.
THE WEEK’S MOST POPULAR CURRENT SONGS ACROSS ALL GENRES, RANKED BY STREAMING ACTIVITY FROM DIGITAL MUSIC SOURCES TRACKED BY LUMINATE, RADIO AIRPLAY AUDIENCE IMPRESSIONS AS MEASURED BY LUMINATE AND …
The diversity of songs is interesting and brought back a lot of memories. Kind of surprised to see Commander Cody's Hot Rod Lincoln that high on the charts. Used to see movies at Cinema Village NYC and sometimes pop in the Lone Star Cafe ( and now I live in the Lone Star State! ) which was around the corner, afterward. I've must have seen Cody 3 or 4 times. In 1980, on one of my first dates with my wife, we saw a movie at the CV and then caught Commander Cody at the Lone Star.
Side note; 1st date was almost our last. Went to see Jean Luc Godard's La Chinoise and Week-End. She thought I was insane.

In 1972 I was about the only student campaigning for McGovern at Oklahoma State. A B-24 pilot in WWII, knew what war was about and had the balls to prove it.

On Paul McCartney, i heard an interview with him a couple of months ago and was just astounded at how sharp he was for his age. You would never know, listening to his interview, that he was approaching 80. I have to say, listening to his recent stuff and hearing him speak, my appreciation of him and his music has improved.
Commander Cody- that was some good stuff. Back in the 70's a friend of mine went to Colgate U., I think it was, and his frat hosted a pre-concert party before a Commander Cody concert on campus. He told me everyone was really shocked when the Commander himself showed up for the party, And he was already drunk, And proceeded to drink like a fiend. He said he was a raving party animal, and (pause for effect....) "not in a good way".
So everyone at the party was like, this guy is too freakin' drunk to perform - is there even going to be a show tonight?
But the guys went to show and they said the Commander was - get this - totally unflinching normal, like himself, just another night in the life. From that they realized how debased and hard-core that guy was.
