Malindi Elmore and Natasha Wodak both place in the top-20 for women, and Elmore just outside the top 10. Great to see the Canadians follow-up with solid performances after doing so well in the Olympics.
once again, staggeringly annoying TV coverage. Is it is possibleto do a worse job? Absolutely, because the Larry Rawson boardcasts were terrible a decade ago, but I'm surprised that the marathon majors don't demand better coverage, smarter coverage, for these races taht they spend so much money supporting.
Larry Rawson was much better than this- at least he called the race. He tried to relate the pace so that the average viewer could understand. And you know what? I actually worked with a guy who went to his local high school track and was going to run 1 Mile at the pace the marathoners were going. After 200 meters he gave up and had a much better understanding and a lot of respect for them.
Seeing as half this board thinks runners from that era were tougher, trained harder, and are so much better than today's runners - I would think its a shock to many that we have any runners close to what Rodgers ran in '79 - must be the shoes.
Apparently at least one of them (Rodgers) was just flat out better. Better racer, better competitor, faster, more durable. Better.
BR was laying down times that our current super shod pros cannot. Not saying he was tougher, or whatever, but he out performed them.
Running is an extremely objective sport. It's not like football or whatever, you are what clock says you are, and our current guys struggle to match what BR and Salazer where throwing down. Deal with it.
If the clock really says what Bill Rodgers is, then he would have been the third American today. That is objectivity.

Yes, but that doesn't address the point of the post.
Take every dollar spent on athletes in Boston this year and turn it into Men's only prize money. I' very curious. 20+ years ago they said there was $10 million in appearance money.
Olympic and World Champs supposedly got $1 million appearance fees.
Remember- golfers pay all of their expenses.
At least that's what they say to the IRS today. We all know that sponsors pay all of their expenses.
Perfectly reasonable questions for someone to ask if you don't buy into all the phony pre-race hype and overly toxic positivity that forgets to take a step back and see a little humor in these endeavors and realize one must have a better perspective these days when an entire country is being invaded by a madman and innocent people are being killed for no reason.
Where are all you, "Molly is still on PB pace" people from an hour ago????
She was on PB pace then, but the passage of time can change things. That doesn't change that she was on PB pace then.
She was grimacing often before she dropped back (and later dropped out). The marathon can go well or rip you apart. If you make your living on marathons, you have to know yourself well enough to drop out. Long term damage is not worth finishing on an off (or injured) day.

Agreed.
I think Kobbs wants to suggest that he knew she was done once she dropped back. Good for him, but I think we've all seen marathoners fight back and come out with a good finish. Like some of us said, she was still on PB pace at that time. We don't know exactly why she was grimacing. Kobbs can gloat all he wants.
Professional darts leagues get better coverage than this
Professional darts leagues likely have a bigger fan base and definitely have far more tv coverage. If distance running was on tv as often as I see darts showing up when I scan the channels, I'd be so happy.
Face it, distance running has almost no interest, especially from the viewpoint of network executives making decisions as to what to air and how much money to spend on covering it properly. Be happy that Boston was available to view at all - it's a minor miracle.

A time FROM 1979!!!! should NOT be close!!
That is my point! Not top 3 not top 10.. American marathoners have failed to make significant improvement on what was being done in 19 freakin 79!
