Things are resolved amicably, with reference to a long-held code of conduct. You can be firm, but always courteous. Never generous. Foreign attitudes can be a problem, so if you are a foreigner and work to understand the local mores and customs, that plus speaking the language shows respect and helps get you accepted by the community.
