As one of the few retirees I will make a couple comments on my experience. If you want to travel I would do that as soon as you can since health can determine your ability to do that. Even if you live a moderate lifestyle, exercise, and eat well genetics or the roll of the dice can determine the trajectory of your health. I have found it is important to remain active, that includes household chores. In my working years I walked miles each day, that needs to be compensated for some way in retirement. It is important to have good medical coverage. In the last couple of years my wife and I have had medical expenses that at the wholesale level would cost close to $1 million. Our out of pocket expense have been under $10,000 the past four years. Our AARP low deductible medicare insurance plan run $388 a month for the two of us. We each have AARP prescription drug coverage at $35 each per month. We could perhaps go lower on the prescription drug coverage since we both require little in that regard currently, but future needs would be a concern. I am most surprised by the time spent seeing physicians, tests, and undergoing various procedures. None of this was at the front of our mind at age 65.
