They also look at the strength of the region.
In 2019, Dana Hills did not beat any eventual auto-qualifiers during the season. I think they were selected because Newbury Park and Great Oak were the top 2 teams in the nation that year, and Dana Hills (also a CA team) got third in the merge. But they got 8th at NXN, which shows they belong there
Cali should have probably got 2 auto bids that year but they only got one. same unfortunate circumstance can happen to southwest this year.

The only thing on the El Paso Eastwood resume that year was the win at the state meet in the merge, which doesn’t mean much. Head to head wins are not the same as merge wins. No surprise that they got last at NXN for the second time in a row.
Also Eastwood had no front runner to make the score lower, and Jesuit had Strangio that would have put up a low number for the team obviously. Jesuit had depth that year too
And I think Jesuit beat Dana Hills head to head sometime during the season that year

my guess is after Brea Olinda, CA got at-large, that team decided to send their top runner to footlocker. It was pretty clear the goal that season for them was just to make nxn and not care how they performed there. My guess is after that the committee stopped sending 2 at-large bids to cali

CA sent two at-large teams on both the boys and girls side in 2022. CA also sent two at-large teams on the boys side in 2018. All 4 boys CA teams placed in the top 11 that year
