I think the point you're missing is that Fisher's progress has been clear and consistent over a number of years (same goes for SML, who others have thrown out there). If there is an American that suddenly shows up running 1:41s out of nowhere then I will call BS on it.

Strategy must have been to go with the leaders but running right behind someone opening in 59 was a recipe for disaster. Could've formed a nice little chase pack with Muir. Could've had a shot at a medal.
I thought he was dead when everyone started kicking, but then at about 200 he turned it on and it was just a matter of whether he would catch them before the finish line.
it has been fantastic this Olympics watching our American men just consistently perform well, run smart, and win medals.
Need to see 100m splits but my guess is that it was more everyone dying then him picking it up much. They went way too hard from a bit too far.
