Cedar Falls boys team does seem to have a solid 6th and 7th close behind their 5th. 4th and 5th Cedar Falls runners were flip flopped at MVC Mississippi Divisional and Iowa State Qualifying Meet.

AJ had no competition last time he ran Ashton with a 15:34, this time he was trying to catch Merrick and went 15:22 Big difference right there having someone to chase. Was a lot faster field of kids.
West is going to get crushed at state. It doesn't benefit the coach or runners ro score and have everyone at home see that they finished last place. The new rules are ridiculous.

A lot of added runners to the 4A fields does not help the quality of the meet. It just creates more congestion for teams' 4-5-6 runners and in several cases will give company to the 6-7 runners that struggle.

This is awesome, and I appreciate your compiling it. I will say though that a deliberate deep-dive into race results could produce a more accurate projection, since it’s XC and courses vary quite significantly. Still, your lists are interesting and have value for what they are.
From someone who has been following Iowa HS XC for a long time and has followed XC & track closely in the last couple years, this list strengthens my conviction that 1) Iowa HS distance running is better than ever and 2) at the same time, there are probably more short courses than there were 10-20 years ago.
West is going to get crushed at state. It doesn't benefit the coach or runners ro score and have everyone at home see that they finished last place. The new rules are ridiculous.

Somebody must have wanted the rule changed. Ihsaa has really changed their attitude from a championship to a participation event in the last couple decades. I agree that the course gets smaller as the field gets bigger so maybe a larger, longer start stretch. As far as West goes, who cares if they can score or not. The districts arent perfectly balanced either. Maybe they are better than other districts 3rd place teams anyway. The real complaint could be from other 4th place teams that are better than them! The anomaly is that 5 from the same school arent coming out of a district meet very often. If they arent any good, I guess you dont have a lot to worry about. Just dont fake your concern for them or their coach. They dont want it and I would think they are definitely going to see how many they can take down with nithing to lose. With 1 senior, it's probably going to be a great motivator for next year. Good luck trying to take qualifying spots away in the future, it wont happen. Best case scenario is to just get a wider start area.
Of course people want more qualifiers. The association makes more money. And a bunch of slow kids get to go to state and theor parents and coaches get to brag about it. But it is a team sport. The best basketball player in the state may not qualify for the state tournament but the 100th best XC runners qualified this year.
