Here's a video of the state 3200 last year. Looks like Breker is out of it with 600 meters to go. Even at 200 it looks like too much to make up. He has the fitness and has crazy drive. Unfortunately, this video pans away from the leaders on the final turn.
North’s 5th man seriously needs to step up if they want any sort of shot at beating Wayzata. Even then, Wayzata might still be better. If he doesn’t step up at state, I could see Rosemount beating North going forward. This meet almost seemed like a dual meet between these 2 teams. Except for a few really good individuals like Hage and Starfield. In a bigger field, there will be so many guys taking down North’s 5th man. Which will add more points to their score. Many of us are still waiting for McNeil to get back to where he was last year in track when he made state in the 3200.
Wayzata looks like a favorite right now. They could have 5 guys in the top 15 or top 20 at state.
I think it’s going to be closer and maybe even an upset at Sioux Falls. There are 2 other girls in the state consistently running 17s that never get challenged. Other than Covid (Fall 2021) Jade Rypkema has been undefeated for years now. She ran state 3 weeks after getting out of ER last year. Nechanicky skipped the season. Jade has beat Overgaauw 4 times in their HS careers. And Both these 2 girls are running alone out front and winning by over a minute. I think you are underestimating some of the Small school competitors. we will see- not everyone runs in the 16s alone but with a challenge I think all 3 of these girls may be capable.
What about on the team side? Can Minnetonka take down Olathe West from KS and go to NXN? Mor is back. Lost to an 8th grader on the team but it’s been a long while since she last ran a XC race. Sad that Downin transferred to Edina. Would have been #3 for Tonka. She has a brother who still goes to Tonka. Maybe she chose Edina for some non - running reasons. If she went to Edina just for running then it was a wrong decision. I don’t see Edina girls going to state this year over Minnetonka or Prior Lake.
It seems like you guys in Minnesota really care about this. Like you guys are world class geeks. How do you explain that Minnesota was 33rd out of 33 teams for the men at the Nuttycombe meet? It seems with the high school scene being strong that this would not be the case.
The great thing about this thread is that it is about building interest in high school cross country running. There is virtual no negative comments in 23 pages, very unique to this website.
The UMN just got a new coaching staff last year and graduated 3 of their top runners. Today was a poor showing for sure, but we need to give the staff time to rebuild before we judge

OK yeah I wasn’t sure and I know they cut something maybe indoor track for the men. Not sure how much that matters.
Yeah that’s not gonna help retain the in-state talent, which the UMN has been pretty bad with for years. To be fair, there were some solid HS guys in the last decade that never developed so that kept local guys away too.
Dowling catholic IA (Griak champs) - these are from last week. They ran another race this week. 185 177 170 168 163 Wayzata may have gotten only 3rd at Griak, but they might have re-established themselves as favorites in the state and the region as well.
The Wayzata top 5 might not be easy for North and Rosemount to catch up to. The top 2 Wayzata speed ratings at conference were 174 and 171 last year. So 5 SRs this year above the #2 SR from last year.
Speed ratings: Lakeville north 179 173 170 170 162
Rosemount 175 172 170 167 164
Minnetonka (with only one Fries) 179 175 173 159 157
Iowa City IA (from last week)
187
172
165
165
158
I think Minnetonka might be able to beat Rosemount and/or Lakeville North if the older Fries and Downin are back and healthy.
But for now, I would rank these teams like this (without R Fries and Downin)
1. Wayzata
2. Dowling Catholic IA (won at Griak)
3. Lakeville North
4. Rosemount
5. Iowa City IA (got 8th at NXR last year with 4 nonseniors scoring. Also has Ford Washburn who broke 15 in the 5K a couple of times this year)
