I take a middle-ground view on this.
The problem with free college for all is that it does lead to unqualified students who attend substandard schools. That's bad for taxpayers and ultimately bad for students as well.
I'm fine with government support of higher education, but only for schools who maintain the highest standards. That is tough to codify into law but I think it can be done. Other nations have been able to do it so we can too.
Seems more like a problem with the for profit school model to me and poor quality of education. This doesn’t seem to be a problem across most of Europe. More education is always good. Now it doesn’t need to come at a cost of 30k/year - that’s a different topic IMO. Given the US outspends almost every other nation across various metrics on a per capita basis and yet underperforms severely leads me to believe we have a mismanagement problem here above everything else.
Unfortunately a degree will get you a job over someone who doesn’t have one - that’s just reality. That leads to young kids going immediately into debt as adults to pay for the best school possible. People will continue to pursue the avenue that gives the best opportunities, so this problem will persist.
Let me take it a step further. Our primary education system is horrendous, makes for lots of dumba$$es going through the system unprepared to make the most out of a college degree but “qualifying” for loans.
