Although the 4x4 won't provide any surprises with who wins it's going to be a real shoot-out for 2nd place. After considerable data crunching and a couple frosty beverages, I predict:
Bethel 3:14.5
Carleton 3:18.3
Gustavus 3:18.7
St. Thomas 3:18.8
And 5th place will be 3:21+
I like this 4x8 smack talk. Here we go, assuming for the sake of argument that everyone loads it and runs close to their best.
Olaf:
Bjork (1:53)
Coffey (1:53)
Eggers (1:56)
Lonergan/Lenz (1:58) for a time of 7:40.
Carleton:
Donny (1:50)
Withbroe (1:54)
Sikes (1:56)
Little Cook (1:59) for a time of 7:39.
Concordia:
Supinski (1:55)
Lillehaugen (1:54)
Solheim (1:58)
Nelson (2:00) for a time of 7:49
Bethel:
Hatton (1:53)
Huffman (1:56)
Haugen (1:56)
Klamm? (1:54?) for a time of 7:39
Gustavus:
Fredrickson (1:53)
Sandberg (1:57)
Fredrickson (1:57)
Madigan (1:58) for a time of 7:45
St. Thomas:
Karlson (1:57)
Jones (1:58)
Knowlton/Halbmeier (1:57)
Burback (1:56) for a time of 7:48
St. John's:
Bugler (1:55)
Lamb (1:58)
Zimmerman (1:58)
Raasch (1:58) for a time of 7:49
Interesting. Bethel, Olaf, and Carleton seem to be the A group, while Gustavus, SJU, Concordia and STU are in the B group, assuming again that it's loaded. Carleton has to be the favorite. They've shown in the past that they love winning relays at Conference, and they'd probably be the favorite even with Olaf and Bethel's best teams in the race. Having a 1:50 guy on the anchor gives them that edge. Bethel is probably the safest bet for second, given their depth of 800m specialists. Even if Klamm doesn't do it--which he probably won't--they have other guys who can run 1:57/8. Concordia has two guys who can hang with anyone but probably not enough depth. Olaf is the real wildcard. Bjork has been on the team in the past, but Eggers? Coffey? Unlikely those two will run, because they'll be focused on the mile, presumably. Olaf could be anywhere from 3rd to 8th. SJU is the likely candidate for third. Bugler seems to like running the Conference relays, and, if he's on it, they'll probably put together their best squad. St. Thomas and Gustavus are a toss-up, but Gustavus probably has the edge in having a guy with 1:53 potential either to give them a lead or to close it hard.
Final Prediction:
1) Carleton
2) Bethel
3) St. John's
4) Gustavus
5) St. Olaf
6) St. Thomas
7) Macalester
8) Concordia[/quote]
