There is difference between wanting it to be a rivalry and it actually being a rivalry. I would love to see Bol get to a place where this constitutes as much but past and present results indicate that it's not.
Just noting that Cockrell and Jones are now #4 and #5 all-time in the 400H. Syd can move to the open 400 knowing that the future of the event looks bright for team USA.
This is an insane stat! Holy crap. What was Jasmine Jones' PB before tonight?
Femke in tears talking to Dutch press. Says she doesn't understand what happened, feels she's in the shape of her life, then lactic hit too hard at 250m. Also wasn't expecting Anna to be so close and that rattled her (like when Holmes passed her in the relay last year). Praises Sydney and acknowledges that she is just too good.
If the hurdles were moved a little FARTHER apart, we would see guys go faster. Especially guys like Holloway. He has to chop his steps terribly. Spreading them out would allow him to run more freely, open his stride to more his natural stride.
In order to 2-step, they'd have to be moved considerably closer together....and of course, everyone would be alternating legs every hurdle.
Interesting… 115 or 120M hurdles? Or just remove one hurdle?
From Wikipedia: " For the 110 m hurdles, the first hurdle is placed after a run-up of 13.72 metres (45 ft) from the starting line. The next nine hurdles are set at a distance of 9.14 metres (30 ft) from each other, and the home stretch from the last hurdle to the finish line is 14.02 metres (46 ft) long."
[interesting to note the old imperial measurements hanging around in there]
The hurdles could be spread to like 9.25 or 9.3m apart at there'd still be some running room at the end, but a little less.
With all these athletes falling off I wonder if one of the bakers in the Olympic village has been coughing on the croissants
with Lyles' case so fresh in my mind, my first thought was whether Bol has covid, too.
After the extremely covid-cautious Tokyo games and now this, makes me wonder if the answer for future Olympics to set policies somewhere in between.
Maybe you don't forbid anyone from competing if they test positive like in Tokyo, but you do require athletes to test and quarantine. Not hard for superspreader events to happen, and they could totally ruin the competition. The way the US athletes are gathering and cheering on their teammates every night, you just need one superspreader event to make a big dent in your medal haul.
there's an easier solution: don't make mask wearing such a stigma. If Lyles had been traipsing around with a mask for the last week during his travels, his chance of covid drops.

Since 1 June 2024, Bol has competed 14 times, racing the 400H on eight of those occasions. During the same period, Syd completed seven races: an early 400 followed by an uninterrupted string of 400H. One wonders if Bol drops most of the extras--flat 400, 200, relays--in the immediate buildup to 2025 Tokyo Worlds, could she close the gap?
Was Bol out too fast? I expected her to try to come from behind, but she was nearly even with SML for the first half of the race. She was trying to run 50-point, couldn't do it, and ran 52-low. Cockrell was incredible, as of course was SML.
Yes.
Bol's recent races leading up to Paris got her ready to match SML for the first 200, which she did tonight.
But, was completely bankrupt from hurdle 8 on.
Best Femke go back to running within herself for the first half of the race and not try to run SML's race. It's gotten her down to 50.95. Likely, she can go a bit faster on the DL circuit.
After seeing how well SML, Cockrell and Jones did tonight, US women should run away with the 4x400 relay. Looking forward to seeing Thomas on that team. And, possibly take down USSR's 3:15 WR.
Expecting both SML & Bol to run sub-48 anchors. Likely, Kratochvilova's 47.7 all time best relay split will be bettered.
Altitude got her down to 50.95. This is sea level now. Let Sydney go to that place Bol ran that time and see if she doesn't run a 49 low for the hurdles. You people need to stop with that 50.95 crap.
Feels like the 110h hurdles is one of the few events to have not really progressed since the 1990s, still scratching around the 13s mark every cycle. Why?
For someone of Holloway's ability, he should be running 12s consistently. Instead, we usually see 13s. Well at least he won gold, something I didn't expect to see him do.

You obviously haven't looked at his results from this season.

Not by much. Masks aren't as efficacious as we want to believe they are.
