That's kind of how things work. Once upon a wartime we had friends/allies and enemy's. When the war is concluded some of our former friends are now enemies and our former enemies become our allies. And the next thing you know, Bang-Zoom we're on the moon. No science fiction writer could ever in-vision this occurring. If I'm wrong with my previous sentence I'll happily stand corrected.
I haven't heard Russia saying much about that fact that they lost almost 500 soldiers in a matter of minutes while trying to cross the Siverskyi Donets River. Of course, Russia still claims that only one sailor died when the Moskva sank due to bad weather (that didn't affect any other ships in the Black Sea). It took Russia almost 3 months to capture up to 1,700 soldiers and they devoted how many resources to doing so? Ummm... gold star for Russia?
Russian forces made significant tactical mistakes during the attempted large-scale crossing of the Siverskyi Donets River from Kreminna. The Russian command reportedly sent 550 servicemen of the 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 41st Combined Arms Army to cross the Siverskyi Donets River in order to encircle Ukrainian forces near Rubizhne from the northwest.[3] Ukrainian artillery destroyed the Russian pontoon bridges and tightly-concentrated Russian troops and equipment around them on May 11, which reportedly resulted in 485 casualties and damages to over 80 pieces of equipment.[4] The 74th Motorized Rifle Brigade had previously attempted a river crossing (over the Desna River in Chernihiv Oblast on March 8) without suffering such setbacks.[5] The unit’s command and staff may have failed to recognize the dangers that Ukraine’s improving artillery capabilities posed two months later, or may simply have been incompetent or unable to control their troops.
The Ukrainian destruction of significant elements of a Russian motorized rifle brigade that tried to cross a pontoon bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River on May 11 has shocked prominent Russian milbloggers. Those bloggers h...

relatedly, I'm always a bit amazed that decades NASA was run by ex-Nazis. I mean...it's a tribute to how well enemies thought we'd treat them because Von Braun brought his team to America and not USSR or UK....but man. Nazis. Actual Nazis.

Well, yeah, you're wrong with your previous sentence. It is "envision", not "in-vision".
You might want to check the history books and get back to us?
Calm down.
You differed with me not in regard to Russia sustaining one of three k.i.a.
In regard to Japanese deaths, Iwo Jima. Do we count massive Japanese suicides as K.I.A.s? I didn't. If you want to count suicides as K.I.A., go ahead and count them.
This is so completely dumb I thought your post was an error you made by mistake.
The numbers aren’t even close. You can count them however you want to. The fact that you think that a large amount of US civilians were killed in Iwo Jima shows all I need to know about your knowledge.

Dear grammar Nazi, like I said I'll happily stand corrected, but I meant the facts, not the grammar. But I'll gladly accept your admonition and try to do better in the future. Do you have anything else off topic you'd wish to take be to task for?

Oh, but we talked about it. A lot. So now let's talk about something new, like 1000 Azov soldiers being "evacuated" to a military prison in Donetsk?
Any comments on what Zelensky was thinking with this "mission complete" in the steel mill?
Does he understand, that soldiers, in order not to get death penalty, will tell all?
Current count is 1730 Soldiers who have surrendered over the last few days at the Azovstal Steel Plant. More are known to be holding out, including Commanders.
The plethora of "New Speak" substitutions for "surrender" screams propaganda bias.
Aside from "surrender", the only suitable term applying when laying down arms and giving, yourselves up to the other side, Western MSM headlines and descriptions state Ukrainian (former) combatants there "accomplished their mission", "abandoned the site", "were evacuated", "were ordered to leave", "are being exchanged", "were rescued"...
Euphemistic messaging was consistent, indicating a kind of blatant media collusion.
Realizing the impossibility of a positive spin job now, the Ukraine Military now refuses to comment altogether.
Russia's siege of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol stuttered towards its end on Thursday, with hundreds of fighters still holed up in the Azovstal steel works and some 1,700 who have already surrendered facing an uncertain fate...
Does your computer not have a search function for explaining "Pyrrhic victory"? Or are you simply dense as uranium?
You are the type that would be saying in 1972: "We can't be losing in Viet Nam, we have won every major battle, we have bombed Hanoi into the Paleolithic and our kill ratio is fantastic!"
In almost 85 days, Putin has won less than 30% territory of a tiny independent country that he surprise attacked with an overwhelming force, which has been reduced by 30% due to casualties, including 12 generals. He has zero chance of taking Odesa or Kyiv, and having troops tied up in Mariupol for the whole time is a big part of the reason why (along with the sinking of the Mockba).
I guess those Russians should have stayed home rather than invading a sovereign nation if they didn't want to get shot. The only sad aspects are that it wasn't Putin and that they didn't get shot in the head.
Deserting the army is 14 years jail time in Russia. They also have propaganda, just like CNN and NBC, that tells them, how brave and patriotic it is to go abroad and fight for your country.
Also, I hope you have prepared and bought Yuan, since dollar is gonna be worthless beginning Mai / June. Russia, China and Saudis are not joking around, this is the end of the Western world as we know it.

Explain to me how winning this objective is bad for Russia.

You asked to be corrected. I obliged. Don't blame me for your own request.

From what I understand, I that doesn't mean too much being on the West side of the Atlantic ocean, the soldiers were asked to hold the line until further orders. The reasons are more than a few. But one is they were needed to keep Russian Soldiers occupied, trying to kill them/fighting else ware while Ukraine was trying to take more men into their military.
I've recently read that Ukraine has more men wanting to sign up than Ukraine can process. Some enlistees are being sent home and will be called up when there's openings for them. By years end some military annalists suggest Ukraine could have 1,000,000 new recruits to fight in this war. The Ukraine Soldiers are fighting for heart and home .
The Russian Soldiers are similar to American Soldiers fighting in Viet Nam. They went because they were called. But once they got there they couldn't figure out why. But they honored their respected countries and fought and died for what? History shows not too much.

So many substitutes for "surrendered" and "captured". Knowing men in Ukraine, who are asking for donations, so they can buy their own vests and helmets, since they got issued nothing but the rifle and camo, I seriously wonder where did American $$$ billions go?
More than half of serious Ukrainian soldiers like AZOV are dead, captured or AWOL. Maybe they need more $billions?
Correct. The Russian invasion is the ultimate Wrong here. Were they to simply go home, this would all be over. You spend far too much time handwringing over the horrors of war instead of focusing on the obvious resolution: the murderous aggressors give up and go home.
It's really that simple. No need to pretend it's more complicated.
Murderous aggression = bad. Agree?
Russia to "go home?" What? Did Russia quit & go home at the Stalingrad when they took a beating from the onset? No...5 months later & suffering over 1 million causalities, Russia destroy Germany's 6th army - Hitler's best & most proudest army corps. This defeat gave Hitler a nervous breakdown & he was never the same the rest of the war.
Field Marshal Konstatin Rokossovsky, a Polish-Russian, was one of the hero's of Stalingrad motivating & inspiring his troops when things looked very bad initially. I imagine there's a "Rokossovsky" among the Russian army capable of inspiring the troops.
Anybody that knows a little something about warfare realizes Russia will eventually overpower Ukraine & win the war. Since NATO & the U.S. will not directly enter the conflict (they're terrified of Russia's superior nuclear arsenal), Russia will eventually wear down the Ukrainian forces forcing an unconditional surrender, I believe, sometime this summer.

Cannon fodder. It's sweet what they're trying to do, but having served in the army for 5 years myself, I know the difference between a civilian with a rifle and a trained soldier.

Good for Russia to score a victory or two before they go back to pitching entire BTGs to drone strikes. The Russian military will never recover from the damage to manpower and materiel from the last few months.
And yes, it is totally fine to cheer for the death and destruction of murderous invaders. They could decide to go home tomorrow to avoid any more bloodshed.
