Many people state that we should have equal opportunities for everyone. But the truth is that very, VERY few actually want this. To point out just one item that probably does not have a whole lot of support - In order to achieve equal opportunities for all, we would have to have a 100% inheritance tax rate (or the effective equivalent). How many are in favor of this?
34 percent of Harvard students are white. 43 percent of those students are either legacies, children of faculty, kin of donors or a recruited athlete. 75 percent of them would not have gotten in if not for special status (National Bureau of Economic Research).
The liberals who run Harvard could end legacy admits tomorrow - and probably 99% of Americans would be fine with it.
Harvard and other schools should end legacy admits, and you are correct that 99% of Americans would agree with it. Affirmative action was necessary during the Jim Crow era to counteract blatant clear-cut racism in hiring decisions. However, affirmative action in college admissions in this day and age is basically a band-aid that solves nothing at the societal level, but makes it easier for well to do (or at least middle class) students of color to gain admission to Ivy league, and other high ranking schools. These students were never at risk, and could have easily gained admission to other colleges that provide high quality education. I come from a middle/lower middle class white family, and attended an elite private liberal arts college with a lot of financial aid. Most of the students of color who attended my college (not all, but definitely most) came from families with much greater financial means than me. They were qualified to attend, and I think there is value in having racial diversity on college campuses and in the workplace, but like I said, affirmative action is a band-aid that does very little to address the cycle of poverty that many people of color (and white people) are trapped in. Making decisions regarding college admission based on socioeconomic status would be a much fairer system that would also help students of color that achieved good grades despite coming from disadvantaged homes.

I have long thought that a system that provides advantages to those who have lived a life of disadvantage would be much fairer, more effective and more widely accepted than one which provides advantages to those with a certain skin color.
Well slavery lasted a few hundred years with extreme discrimination lasting roughly 120 more so we could maybe use those numbers as a guideline
Cute rhetoric, surely.
But is there any real logic in this? My suspicion is that the answer is "no".
The logic employed by people who think like that, or at least the logic as applied to affected white people, is not logic that looks for any kind of nexus between the competing harms, but rather a more "Too bad, payback is a b!tch, just suck it up" type logic.
WASHINGTON — A conspiracy-minded Donald Trump supporter who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 was arrested Thursday near the home of former President Barack Obama, a law enforcement official told NBC News
Some color on this and it’s frightening. Trump is now threatening Obama and ma’ga understands the assignment. trump will do this for the trials too.
Donald Trump recently posted a screenshot featuring Barack Obama’s DC address. A Jan. 6 participant who has been living in a van by the DC jail and has creeped out other J6 supporters saw it. “Got them surrounded!” he reposted. Arrested near the home.

I’m an affected white person and somehow it doesn’t hurt my feelings or feel like “payback” in a negative way. It feels necessary and right.
I think Asians not getting into Yale pales in comparison to the history of unequal treatment Black Americans have faced. I am sympathetic but I ultimately don't think the level of unfairness even comes close
That may well be. But providing a disadvantage to an asian person today does not provide an advantage to a black person who lived 200 years ago.
As such, is your comparison relevant?
Black people today are disadvantaged by discrimination that happened to their parents and grandparents within the last 60 years.

Reading comprehension. I was saying the logic employed by people advocating your position is not one that looks for any kind of nexus between the inflicted harms, but rather one that essentially says to one group: "Too bad, payback is a b!tch, just suck it up." So I wasn't saying your feelings were hurt or that you feel like you were on the receiving end of payback. Do you understand the difference?
Also, your comments today on the SFFA case show that you obviously have not read it. If you really plan on law school, this is chance before you get there to take a look at what will undoubtedly be the highlight case in your Con Law class.

I agree with that.
But, as I posted previously, "I have long thought that a system that provides advantages to those who have lived a life of disadvantage would be much fairer, more effective and more widely accepted than one which provides advantages to those with a certain skin color."
Why not adjust for the disadvantage rather than the race?

Yes I understand the difference. I’m part of the group that was told to suck it up, but that does not necessarily mean that I feel like I have anything to suck up. I don’t really feel like I have anything to suck up. The world is my oyster.
no I have not read the 200 page document released today. I try to avoid my job but it does unfortunately exist. I do know military leadership schools are exempt from the ruling. Maybe that’s rudimentary and not specific enough but I read that today

My problems with the previous form of affirmative action was that they tend to advantage rich Nigerians rather than black Americans. I think the history of disadvantaging one skin color should be corrected against, but the goal is always to help the economically disadvantaged.
Are you seriously denying that Trump could end the Ukraine war in 24 hours? You haven't been paying attention to his previous exploits in the international arena. Ukraine would be a done deal if Trump was president. He has both the poise and moxie needed, unlike anyone else.
Exactly how would he accomplish that?
He mentioned moxie, and I agree that that’s the key ingredient.
