Nobody cares what you think.
Absolutely. Note that Comrades often includes 2:08 runners but the winner is generally a 2:12, 2:15 or even 2:17 marathoner (as Fordyce was, from memory). It takes more than a fast marathon time to excel at ultras. As an amateur 100k runner I often beat runners with marathon PRs up to 20 min faster than mine. Conversely, I absolutely suck at mountain ultras and am often beaten by runners with much slower road marathon PR than me. This requires altogether different skills than road running. Each type of event is specific and very few people excel at a wide range of distances and terrains.
Yes indeed. 4th place is impressive.

I don't care if he finishes. Who cares? The 50 Mile is not an important record, except for today's broadcast toward promoting Hoka One One. I think his sponsor should tell him to drop out, for his own health and toward their own future interests in his future training and competition. They got the limelight they needed. Let it go.
Such a sad life you must live. Belittling a WR that you couldn't ever dream of breaking. I really pity your life.
My life Sad? I don't think so. I get to open a spreadsheet tracking my wealth and my sales numbers every day. I'm sure my peoples' shoe sales numbers are so much higher than yours. It's all about the shoe sales, baby!! And the socks! We make such high margins on socks. I get it all, baby!! Tell me about WR's all you want. It's all about marketing stories that lead to sales.
"Jim Walmsley ran faster than the current world record for 50 miles. He was so spent from the effort, even after resting for an hour, he decided not to finish the remaining 12 miles that had been reserved and routed for the course. Walmsley is currently training for the US Olympic Trials for the marathon, said "This was a great milestone in my career with Hoka One One. This 50-mile world record has been around for over 30 years. I look forward to moving toward the marathon distance with Hoka One One, and qualifying for the Olympic team." "
All truth in there, right? Sell shoes, baby!!
I am sure are these clowns hating on Jim are bigger fans of the other Americans that have broke a distance WR in the last decade. Who is your favorite?
What did I miss? Did Jim break the woman’s tape?
Final results
1. Hideaki Yamauchi 6:19:54
2. Patrick Reagan 6:33:50
3. Yoshiki Takada 6:52:03
4. Jim Walmsley 6:55:25
5. Mike Wardian 7:29:10
6. Sabrina Little 7:49:28
Sabrina ran an excellent race.

He came 4th overall and set a 10 minute PB in the 100 km but was first at 50 miles in a new world's best by about 40 seconds.

And this is why ultra-"running" has the reputation is does.
I've never NEVER observed a legit track, XC, or road race where an athlete goes balls-out in pursuit of a "en route record" and then spends the rest of the actual race laughing, clowning, slapping high fives, walking.
Let's be real. This isn't real athletics. This is country club nonsense, catered towards a select group of rich white weirdos. Embarrassing.
Bill Rodgers got the 25k and 30k track records, his 5k split from 25 to 30 slowed down dramatically.
Indeed. Rodgers ran 1:14:12 (4:47/mile pace) to 25k, and then jogged a 5k in 17:38 (5:41/mile pace). When Mosop broke it he actually sped up; 25k in 1:12:25 (4:40/mile pace) and then a 5k in 14:18 (4:36/mile pace).
Also, may not disprove the "country club nonsense, catered towards a select group of rich white weirdos" but it also happens fairly regularly in triathlon as well. Athletes try and hit the record for one event and then just have to finish the other two for the record to be eligible.

He walked it in. That's what he does best. 4th place 25 minutes behind the winner.
Did I miss anything? Have you broken any tape?
Wait, now I am confused. It looked like JW finished in 6:55 but the results say 7:05:24. That would be ironical as it is exactly 5 seconds slower than his previous PB. It's probably 6:55 though.
Did you miss the goal of the event? The point was to break records in general. 50 miles, 100 km, 100 km relays. Jim accomplished what they set out to do. It didnt have to be 100 km.
Just curious since this was a record attempt I wonder if athletes will be drug tested? Very bad on Hoka if they didn't have this set up, shows they don't care about clean sport really. Much has been said about Jim not being tested much as he has stuck to ultra and not mainstream racing. Makes you wonder kinda. He has also not been in the out of competition testing pool which means he could be using banned substances all year. The sport must do better job with this

Read the title of this thread. The goal was the 100 km world record.
It was a 100 km race. Jim Walsmley came 4th in 6:55 (or 7:05).
En route to that he broke the 50 mile world's best (not a WR by the way) by 40ish seconds. Which is crazy good and makes me hope he will give the 100 km another shot.
Comrades often includes 2:08 has beens. Not current 2:08 runners. Sub 2:08 runners are focused on more prestigious races like big marathons.
So it is a world best because it was a 100k race?

No, it's a world's best because there is no 50 mile world record. The IAAF recognizes the 100 km world record but not 50 miles.
All individual running WR distances:
100 Metres
200 Metres
400 Metres
800 Metres
1000 Metres
1500 Metres
One Mile
2000 Metres
3000 Metres
5000 Metres
5 Kilometres
5 Kilometres
10,000 Metres
10 Kilometres
20,000 Metres
One Hour
Half Marathon
25,000 Metres
30,000 Metres
Marathon
100 Kilometres
3000 Metres Steeplechase
110 Metres Hurdles
400 Metres Hurdles
So there is no such thing as a 2 mile world record? What about other governing bodies?
