No, at large performances are only taken from the state qualifying meet, which for the Southern Section is the Masters. No Masters, no at large entry into the state meet. Unfortunately, some very good runners are shut out of the state meet because they didn't advance to Masters. There are other competitive sections in California, but by far the Southern Section is the most difficult for athletes to qualify for State. Every year there's discussion about breaking up the Southern Section due to its enormous size and population, but that discussion never goes very far.
Southern Section gets twice as many (6) entries into the State meet then any other section. They other very competitive sections get 3 and the small/easy ones get 1.

I makes zero sense why the 4:11s don't get an at-large into the master meet. Why should it be easier to qualify through masters than finals?

Those are the rules. CIF makes it very clear- at large marks will only be considered for performances made in the meet that directly qualifies athletes for the State Meet.

The only thing this proves is that southern section is way too big and needs to be broken up. This wouldn't be an issue if it was made up of 2-3 different sections.
The whole reason at-larges exist is because of southern section and how many people would otherwise be left behind if they were not a thing, despite the fact that there are SIX auto qualifiers to the state meet from masters.
You don't see an ENTIRE heat of a section masters meet run under 10.6 anywhere else in the state - and that is a good thing.

If I had to guess? It's not about who is the fastest - it is about who is the fastest on THAT DAY.
I'm not saying I agree (I don't), but based off of my understanding that is the reason why the rounds and the at large qualifiers are set up the way they are.
In California, we are made up of 10 sections. Not all are consistent. Some should go, and others should be broken up.
To qualify for state (at least in my section, which is Sac-Joaquin), you must...
Race your prelim/final for your league champ
Race your prelim/final for your section DIVISIONAL
Race your prelim/final for your section MASTERS
Race your prelim/final for the STATE meet.
That's a total of 8 races alone. An absurdly high amount.
I strongly agree with breaking up the Southern section. Look at LA-City section for example. Why aren't more schools in that one? We could probably use like 1-2 more sections just like that one to compensate for the SS.
My section is the second largest behind it, yet they are still at least 3x as big as ours. It's like a mini-state meet, which shouldn't be the case.
We need to savor these performances for when we get to state when things actually matter.
I too also always thought Oakland section/SF section were dumb. Oakland and SF section can just easily go into CCS. No need for their own.
I just realized, does the Southern Section not have a prelim/final for Divisions 1-4 anymore? They just host all divisions together after the prelims the following week?

They still have prelims and finals for both, but as far as I understand prelims are all at different locations and finals are at the same location. I assume there were complaints about possible unfair conditions (wind, weather, ect) when they were hosted at different locations.
Noonan (4:04.02) quietly slips past Mark (4:04.15) and Eric Mastalir (4:04.23) on the CA all-time list, just 0.02 off of Stember's high school best and has a year to go yet. He's dropping the 1600 in favour of the 3200m for both Masters and State, then might pick up some mile races in the post season.

So is there still gonna be an SS masters meet next week?

Politics plays a role in determining sections. Long Beach has slightly more people than Oakland, yet Long Beach schools are part of the Southern Section and Oakland, which is noticeably weaker than Long Beach, trackwise, gets their own section. This is just one example. Of course sections are based on all sports, not just track, but I still think an independent, unbiased group should review the sectional setup.
I was taking a look at athletic.net and noticed how insane ccs sophomores were in 2023. Why is that? In 2024, the sophomore looks incredibly mediocre when compared to 2023.

They just got a great group of sophomores compared to previous years. That is it. Happened back in 2018 too, with CCS freshman - go back and check the CCS trials mile that year.
this improvement trajectory is crazy by Eddie sion. I suppose anything is possible but it's a very very low probability to improve like this. Just stay focused be consistent and hope for the best but don't expect it. Be grateful for any small improvement you can get.

most people usually only improve greatly for one season then stagnate and go backwards or incrementally forward. I think its important to not expect to improve and be humble

entered in masters mile last time i checked. is he planning on scratching before the race?
Long Beach rivals Poly and Wilson had a banner day at the CIF-SS Division finals and so did many others who battled for championships and to extend their season
