The guy who ran a bit over 20 min faster than Walmsley when Walmsley walked in the last 12 miles of his event after setting the 50 mile world record? No, I don't think so. Walmsley's 50 mile PR pace is faster than Zach's marathon PR pace. These two aren't in the same universe.
You are right that they are not in the same universe.
Zach Bitter just ran a 6:39 while Walmsley baby struggled to get a sub 7:00 hours in. Even 50 year olds have been faster than Jim over 100k. That's a fact!
Too bad those 100k heroes are one trick ponies with ZERO speed that can't climb a sh*t. Walmsley has an absurd range, raw speed and eats hills for breakfast.
If somebody is a one trick pony it is Walmsley.
He can only run down and up the Grand Canyon.
If he is out of his comfort zone he usually sucks.
Remember when Letsrun was all about supporting the runners who put in the work? Those putting in big miles made the rest of want to work just a little bit harder? News flash: Walmsley is one of those guys. His footspeed won't get him top ten at the trials, but his mileage might.

You have to train smart and not just hard. 150 miles sounds just plain stupid to me. Just running a lot of miles does not make Jim faster.

He was a 13:4x 5k guy in college. How much faster does he need to be for the marathon?

The mileage is high but the amount of quality lacks in his training in my opinion.
20 mi at 6:17 pace is nothing impressive for a 1:04 runner. I am 1:15 runner and I am doing long runs of 17 miles at 6:20 pace and they are just moderate pace.
Also running hills every day is not the best way to train as it just impairs super compensation unless you are going extremely slow.
Yes, obviously something isn't working for Jim! He should be doing much more currently, as his career thus far has been a flop. I mean, really, why is a MUT runner doing all of that hill running?! Should be training for the roads if you ask me!

Uh... significantly.... Look at the 5k times for the top guys. What’s his half PR? Double it and he’s still not making the team.
You need way more than mileage to be good at the marathon.
Seeing this week, it shows me he’s aware he’s not going to make the team and is training through it. Sad.
Lmao! Sierre Zinal was a training run for Jim. He won Ultravasan 90km the next weekend.

Yeah, he will probably not. There is more money for him doing what he is doing than changing to go for the Olympic spot and finish way off at the Olympics. I do not blame him. Were he a 13:0x guy aiming for his first Olympics, I would.

Exactly!
He trained right through the race and has stated he was there for experience. I’m sure he ran hard, but probably wanted to not kill himself too much, he doesn’t necessarily over race, just over trains some tomes ie: UTMB block 2018

Yeah, right.
If Walmsley would have won, it would have been the race he prepared for the whole year.

Yep
1:04 Flat made him the 200. qualifier for Atlanta.

I'll bite. Not sure you can label someone as a one trick pony with the following results:
a) 2-time WS 100 winner with course record
b) 5th at UTMB
c) 50 mile world record
d) 3-time JFK 50 winner with course record
e) 1:04 half qualifier for the trials
All of these races are wildly different from each other, and I could've included more. And yeah, he either crushes it or blows up big time. But you gotta at least give the guy credit for his range and willingness to branch out a bit.

Monday: 26mi Run on Trails (2800ft climbing)
Meh.
Not much climbing for a legit mountain runner.
The local 50k ultra closest to me has 8500 feet of climbing (and comes down the same, so it's not spread out over the whole thing like Jimmy's probably was.. That's **three times** as much as Jimmy's 42k run, and he's bragging about climbing that much?? Try a loop with real climbs.
On the trails in the Pacific Northwest, we call 2800 feet of climbing in 26 miles a "rolling" or "highly runnable" course. 850 meters of climbing in 42k wowwwwww lol.
nine weeks out, there's plenty of time to do an eight week sharpening block, if it's his focus that is, which no one seems to be sure
i mean no one can deny the guy's accomplishments... but it would be nice to see him give it a real go... i mean it is the olympics after all
Does anyone know which brand and model of shoes this guy trains in?
Does not wanting my kids to watch a bisexual threesome at the Olympics make me a bigot?
