I have seen hundreds of war movies since 1960. This may be the best at portrayal of the nightmare of war.

Glory. It's not a combat movie, but I don't really like combat movies.
Paths of Glory.
A classic movie from 1957. I think it was Stanley Kubrick's first feature movie. Its worth checking out if you haven't seen it. Despite it being from the 1950s its very engaging and surprisingly relevant.

Kid, you know nothing about the military history and war movies.
Son, you're a damn fool.
Listen LRC troll because I'm going to talk to you again.
Educate yourself, and I don't mean google. It's never too late softie.
The original Midway movie is great.
Restrepo and The Hornet's Nest
Only one has been voted the greatest film of all time :

The best war movie is Idi I Smotri(Come and See), by Elem Klimov. Easily one of the most haunting and disturbing films out there. Can't really watch it more than once. Spielberg reportedly screened it before making Saving Private Ryan, and took the idea to use sound distortion following explosions from it.
Completely agree. At the theatre screening I saw this at some years ago nearly half the audience walked out because they couldn't handle it. I haven't been able to bring myself to see it again, but that's a testament to the film's power.
I once read an interview with Klimov in which he said that the film was actually toned down, and if he'd made it as realistic as he wanted to -in depicting the German decimation of a Belarussian village- then nobody would've been able to sit though more than the first 8 minutes.
Ahem.

while I'm toying with this moran I might as well mention Gallipoli is about RUNNERS! And it has Mel Gibson in it. And it conveys much more accurately the dull pointlessness of signing up to be shot at. The mistake of most war films is they focus on the survivors and lose touch with the finality of death.
Without looking at other opinions first, I will offer:
Bridge over the River Kwai
Life is Beautiful
Inglorious Basterds
Tropic Thunder
The Great Escape
OK, now I've looked through the other posts. Lots of great suggestions. Still nobody has mentioned the GREATEST war film of all time:
Dr. Strangelove
That's all I got...
One that hasn't been mentioned is Apocalypse Now redux
Peaky Blinders is one that accurately depicts the effects of war on men, after they return. Didn't expect that from it.

I've never managed to stay awake all the way through Apocalypse Now. That and Bladerunner. Probably my fault, not the films'...
Peaky Blinders is a great show, but I'm not sure how you can declare that it "accurately depicts" anything in particular.

Ok, comrade, where can I see this? Never heard of it, interested.

Lawrence of Arabia by a considerable distance.
Platoon for modern times
Gettysburg for the Civil War
Fury was godawful. The worst war movie I've ever seen.
I agree with most else of what's been mentioned here (Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, etc). Also want to throw out Hamburger Hill as an underrated one

I was wondering if someone would have included The Great Escape. One of my favorites, but I'll admit it's probably not considered the "best" by most standards.

Steve McQueen and that famous motorcycle scene ? (no stuntman).
