After my race last weekend I talked a lot to this guy I raced against that ran like 16:20s 5k but he’s more of a mid distance guy (last year he ran 51 low, 1:54, and 4:20) and I said something to acknowledge his sprint speed (he almost outkicked me from WAY far back). Long story short I found out that he also plays a little football. His school’s football team is trash (he actually plays both WR and safety) so I guess that’s the only reason they’re so flexible with his running. He does football twice a week on the XC team’s recovery days and runs before school. Before the race last weekend, he told me that he ran like 6 miles at 4:00ish, played both sides of the football game, only got 5 hours of sleep, then ran a 16:20ish 5k on a hilly course! This guy is crazy (and before any of you say he’s full of it I found him on maxpreps with an accurate height and weight and the school’s football website)... do you guys know if anyone else that plays football and runs at this level?
Played quarterback and ran 16:20 in 10th grade. 4th game separated shoulder so just stuck to running after that.
