Yeah Pattisue Plumer( Polly’s sister) was a multi time Olympian and former AR record holder in the 5K.
The NY Times had a great piece about Tuohy and brought up the comparisons to Cain. It sounds like her parents are really aware of the pitfalls of being a young female phenom, and are really taking pains to ensure her talent is nurtured responsibly.
At the end of the article, it was noted that they had a close encounter with Al Salazar at Nike Nationals, and were warned by the other coaches to NOT let him talk to their daughter, advice which they apparently heeded, which is a good sign indeed.

She might just be a freak athlete though.
Nah. I think she's in the same category as every other sophomore girl who's run 4:33, 9:05 and 15:37.

This is great. Can you imagine some announcer doing that now? Even the dudes who do local Milesplit meets instinctively know better than to pull that one.
"Here comes Tuohy, looking HOT on the backstretch and I don't just mean her pace!"

Also, isn’t Cain’s 4:24 the national record?
She ran that time indoors, so that is the INDOOR record.
From overracing, Ms Tuohy will soon shred an Achilles, and she won't bounce back from surgery like Sean McGorty did.
No, I changed my mind. My bunion tells me that she will put on weight as she advances through high school, and that will be the cause of her decline, like so many other young ladies.
No, I changed my mind. Tea leaves tell me that she will run down the bumpy road of drug abuse (crack cocaine, not PEDs).
No, I changed my mind. I just feel it in my bones that Jama Aden will recruit her from the jail cell he will soon call home, but she will get blood poisoning from a paper cut from the edge of her million dollar contract.
No, I changed my mind. I guarantee that she will enlist the help of the similarly-named Caitlyn Jenner to transition to manhood, the reverse of Jenner's path.
No, I changed my mind. I follow high school track, and I just know that SHE WILL CONTINUE SHREDDING THE RECORD BOOKS...but she will turn down President Trump's invitation to the White House, like all the other high school athletes who have won national championships.

Too much. Not worth your time.

At least that would make the announcing semi entertaining.....

Most of Mary Cain's records were with professional competition, which is hardly comparable to races against just high schoolers in my opinion.
Tell that to Alan Webb -- look at his outdoor high school mile record. Tell that to Drew Hunter -- look at his two indoor high school mile records, and his indoor high school 3k record. Who cares if pros are involved? A fast time is still earned, and it is still awesome. Mary Cain ran some fast times with faster runners, and those fast times are forever on her resume.

You're the moron. You don't know how to spell and you don't know how to type.

There are still 6 1500 conversions ahead of her with Cain at 4:24. Of course, she is only a sophomore.
Yes, can we finally get a Girls HS Mile Record that approaches those 1500 conversions? Why can't any HS girls run a mile as good as their 1500?

I have a genuine question. Why was Sydney McLaughlin not getting this kind of criticism when she was 16??? Makes no sense to bash Tuohy saying she’s “peaking” when McLaughlin almost never got that kind of criticism. In fact, McLaughlin is only 19. People on Letsrun aren’t surprised even when college age woman peak. Why is no one saying “Once Mclaughlin grows into a women’s body, she won’t be nearly as fast as she was?” This whole thing with Tuohy is completely ridiculous, absolutely distasteful, and y’all cant even be consistent with your bashing....
You're missing the whole point here aren't you? You don't understand why McLaughlin is likely to be the highest paid T&F female athlete ever? Because she IS in a woman's body. She's delivering world class results with a world class woman's body and is going to be paid handsomely because of that. She will be a force on the world scene as long as she's motivated to do so.
Tuohy on the other hand is at the tail end of being in a young girl's body, but is training and racing with the intensity of an adult. She has what it takes to win on the world stage in terms of how she moves and her level of focus, but she needs much longer offseasons. You don't let a world class kid run the show just because they are young and want to have fun. That's the whole point of being a proper coach. You have to be the adult and see the big picture, not allowing the excitement of the present steal away her future.
Nearly 50 races a year from 7th grade to 12th grade amount to 250-300 races before even heading out to college where another 100 races will likely be run. Yes, it can help pay for a good education, but a race schedule like that is no way to treat a potential Olympic and World Champion. Anyone not at the world class level, fine do what you want have play time now in jr high and most of high school and sacrifice a little on the tail end with a tired college campaign. People like that may want to learn the hard way and that's ok, but I think there is a different obligation paid to national treasures.
Please forgive me for descending into the debate about this 16-year-old's body. But here goes . . . as I said in another thread, she does not look like the typical girl running prodigy who gets big returns from having a wispy frame despite lacking the power of successful professionals.
Compare Cain at 16 to Tuohy at 16:

The odds are long against professionals success for high school stars in all sports for both sexes, but Tuohy looks to me like she'll be competitive for a long time.

Geez, looks like Tuohy has more testosterone in her body than your average 15 year old boy. Just a block of muscle! Definitely not on an even playing field with other girls.
I think we should just enjoy what she is right now ... one of the best young runners of all time. I think in running we are always looking to our next race, or what we can do next year, etc. and we tend to fail to actually enjoy the moment we are in.
If she burns out, I think it will be more of a mental thing. With girls especially, top talent has a hard time finding any competition at the HS level, and most of her races she dominates from the gun. That is very different than running with others at the same talent level, when race tactics and being able to kick explosively make all the difference.
Great run, but not even the best in that age range this weekend. 17 year old Irish girl runs 409 (6 seconds faster than touhy who came thru in 415).

Professional race in great conditions.... Doubt this girl would touch 4:33 at 92 degrees with high humidity solo. This girl you’re talking about ran 4:18 last week solo versus Tuohy’s 4:14 coming off a double so there you go. Tuohy could run 4;08, if not faster, right now in the right race.
