Well they made pretty damn sure about that, didn't they. 4 or 5 seconds isn't out of reach of a big kick.
Counting the laps was pretty easy in that race, just every time Paul Kipkoech ran by.
Relax... I agree 100% that the officials are idiots. I've watched the race numerous times from start to finish over the years, and again yesterday before I posted (the last 3 laps). It was my strong belief in '87, and still today, that Panetta (the steeple champ that same year, sans controversy I think) would have held his position. He didn't have the best kick, but was tough as nails. Let's not even start with the doping issue as that is a different can of worms. The commentators themselves said it wouldn't have changed first and second (and they were British, with Steve Binns finishing in 5th).
