Championship medals.
It is not that Rowbury couldn't sometimes beat Simpson, but Simpson won the Diamond League and she had won 3 world and Olympic medals during a period that Rowbury had earned just one, and none after Simpson shifted to the 1500m. If you think that I am making up the resentment and competitiveness that Rowbury held for Simpson, go back and watch those competitions. In virtually every single meeting between them, Rowbury would sit on Simpson, not going on ahead even when she was in better shape--and though I think Simpson could run a much, much faster 5000m than she has and would have taken the steeple record down a lot from where she had it, Rowbury has been in great shape numerous times but not been able to get past Simpson when it counts. Her only U.S. outdoor championships, surprisingly given her forays into the 5000m, were in 2008 and 2009. Simpson was in the way the whole time since. In the meantime, Simpson has won 7 U.S. outdoor championships, including one at 5000m and two at steeple, and she was 2nd in the senior race at U.S. xc in 2014. She also won 3 steeple titles in the NCAA and twice took 2nd in xc (also an unaccountable 163rd, of course) (Rowbury had no individual titles in college).
