his age... Who knows.
Most definitely not 18 or 19.
Messi take a step back. This person just set a world record and we are supposed to believe he is a freshman?
A world record!
Take your head out of the sand.
This practice must stop. It is undermining collegiate sport and world athletics at the junior level.
The coach at UTEP should be ashamed. Fired in my opinion. The AD at UTEP should be chastised for allowing an all African track team. The president of the university should take an inward look. UTEP boosters should stop funding a program that is discrimatory. The NCAA should put a stop to this madness.
Maybe when women's athletics begin to share the same fait something might be done.

"Fait?" You just completely negated any shred of legitimacy to your entire rant.
McGrady ran 1:07.6 for 600y. USAFCCCA says multiply by 1.12 to convert to 600m. So that comes out to 1:15.71 for McGrady.
McGrady did run a 1:14.9 outdoors in Australia in 1970. That beat the 1:15.3 of Olympic 800m champion Ralph Doubell in the same race.
Funny how this overage freshman thing only comes up when they are from Kenya even though practically every runner that comes from Europe or Australia is also an overage freshman.

That is correct however we know the age of the europeans and australians. While some of these africans are probably the same age as the older europeans/aussies some of them are even older. The real issue are those who are 26 plus years of age.
Whenever I hear of an issue w/student athletes I always say 'would that apply to a non-athlete studen' (ex forcing athletes to sit out a season).
So for this case would you give a darn if a 30 y.o. (Not saying he's 30) wasn't playing sports but was taking a full course load of 101s and had a 4.0? Probably not, there are 20 somethings and 30 something that are just now starting college for whatever reason.
Also freshman does not mean 18 year old, freshman simply signifies someone who is in their first year of colleg so saying "overaged freshman" is a fallacy.
Don't vilify a coach or AD for giving a kid an opportunity to get a high quality education while at the same time helping their program.
Lastly, regardless of age this human broke a WORLD RECORD no other human has covered 600m faster, super impressive congrats to him.

*Indoors.
Countless men have broken 1:15 outdoors.
Rudisha even went through 600m in 1:14.3 in his 800m WR.

That's still more of an education he is getting than if he were back in Kenya.
Also, my feeling back in the days when I competed against a foreign all-star from anywhere (meaning not just Kenya, but Ireland, New Zealand, etc.) was that it was cool to compete against the best. If you want to be the best you've got to beat the best.
Also, if I had the opportunity to come from an African country to get an education here I would jump at it. There's nothing wrong with that (and in fact it's smart), so please don't blame the athletes. Whether or not it's lazy recruiting is another can of worms.

Freshman... By first year in a U.S. University only.
He is no Freshman by age - that is certain.
Have a look at all of UTEP's runners and judge for yourself.
What a joke and ripp-off to all the legitimate age Freshman training hard and doing their best only to have a continual flow of out of country overage Freshman landing on our shores. Seeking to better themselves for sure but at who's expense?
Some Europeans, Audtralian and Morman athletes are doing the same but not to the same extent as athletes from Africa.
Then there is UTEP... Last I looked the entire team is from Africa including the head coach. Is that what NCAA track and field is all about?
When will this madness stop?[/quote]
it's cool when someone runs that fast. who the hell cares who it is, that's REALLY fastjust enjoy it for now and don't write out meaningless comments. if you found $20 on the sidewalk, you'd be happy and enjoy that you have $20 you didn't previously have. You wouldn't say, "man, that last time i found $20 wasn't as big of a deal as I first thought it was."that's all you have to do. don't be a loser

Fate... Excuse me.
"Rant" call it that if you like.
There is no negating the likelihood of this athlete being well beyond the Freshman age of athletes he is competing against. It is blatant manipulation of the NCAA athletic system and fraud.
A Freshman setting a world record... Give me a break.
That time now becomes a collegiate record. That is theft.
A world record it is.
There are rules. These athletes and teams are WINNING following those rules.
Don't get mad because they are playing successfully by the rules.
I'm surprised Letsrunner Trumpkins aren't more supportive of these WINNERS.
That's crazy fast, but the world record is nevertheless below 1:13....

These athletes that you speak about, and UTEP, are not operating under the spirit of the rules.
Stop trying to make excuses for what is obvious.

Haha the spirit of the rules. Love it. It's like the rules, except not written down anywhere and are completely ambiguous.
No Kenyans, is that the spirit of the rules? I don't actually know. No Europeans older than 19? No farting on the start line?
What's new? UTEP won NcAA x-country and in the top three several times in the early 70s with a bunch of Kenyans, an Aussie and a guy from Rhode Island as scorers. Anyone from Texas? Nope.
Some would show up for a year or two then disappear only to be replaced by another. Blowhard coach Ted ?? Was a recruiter only.

Confucius says:
"Those who fart on the start line will have bad start.
Those who fart while at the start line get extra boost"
A realist says:
"Those who are classified as Freshman but are significantly older are age cheats"
