50k base may sound good now, but that will feel like a lot less toward the end of that 10year period. Most running careers don't even last that long! Do you get paid for the final years even if you hang up the spikes at 25?

Yes, when I read "DEVESTATED," I thought she might have lost by the thickness of her shirt as Steve Cram might have put it approximately.

Hunters base is nowhere near 50k per year. The rumor in Eugene was it was 400k per year. If you think he agreed for anything less than six figures per year you are not smart.
The first post about 500k should have said per year.
No, Hunter did not compete in the trials. Got injured.
rojo, i work for adidas. nowhere near $400k per year. you are confusing Hunter with Brazier.
Riddle me this. How much should Maton have gotten? Verzbickas? What will Cheserek get? What did Jenkins get? How about Slagowski? $200k/year?
You are not smart if you think every sub-4:00 miler can now expect $400k/year from graduating high school.
I'm not really concerned with how much these athletes sign for, but I would like to see track and field athletes able to make a living (and if they can make big bucks, all the better).
Of course my real dream would be to go to a professional quality track meet without having to first but a plane ticket. This shouldn't be unreasonable since I live only 150 miles drive from the 3rd largest city in the US.
I'm also confused by the teenagers on here talking like 50k per year is an amazing amount of money or that they'd buy a bunch of houses with 500k. Don't these people read any of the Flagpole threads!?
Here is from Drew Hunter's dad, a smart guy, meaning the base salary would not have been enough to cover a college tuition. If Drew were getting $400k/year, he could have covered tuition, but the base was $60k/year -
“Had there not been money in the contract for school, it probably wouldn’t have happened,†the runner’s father said.
After you deduct federal and state income taxes and social security, a $50,000 salary quickly nets out to $30,000 or less. Deduct out of that an apartment and utilities, health insurance, car payment & insurance, food, cell phone bill, and you can see he will not exactly be rolling in cash.
First Prep (at what age) to break 8 minutes in the 3km indoors? This year
Fisher went 7:50 indoors (9 seconds faster than Hunter) when he and Hunter were both 18 but Fisher was in college. Fisher also ran 13:30 in the 5 km and made the Olympic Trials this year. So many of these HS stars are actually of college age.
yeah, $500k total over 10 years can't be right. unless it's guaranteed somehowplumbers make more than that.

The difference is that Hunter makes half a million over 10 years regardless and mary cain faces massive performance reductions. Or so letsrun has told me.
Half a million over 10 years!?!
That's chump change. Hopefully he didn't turn down college for sick a small sum

Thanks for the complement, but I wish. I'm in my 70s.

How do you know she is devastated? Did you speak with her?
Let's ban that stupid word from the forum.
She's still very young and very inexperienced cut her some slack you losers.
No, she is NOT very inexperienced.
Stop it with your LIES, shill.

Too bad girls start and end puberty mostly before 18. Check your facts before you insult people.
The fact that you said 'mostly', makes you mostly correct.
When puberty starts has a lot to do with weight, an overweight girl can start puberty as early as elementary school or as late as college if you are really thin. In fact, puberty can be delayed all together into your early-20s if you have an abnormally low BMI. 20-22 seems to be the age where your body starts to rebel against delayed puberty and you start having bone and hormone problems. Btw, puberty isn't completely a bad thing, because it is easier to turn fat into muscle, some girls gain speed/power after puberty. The downturn in performance only last about a year or two, if a girl can manage through this period, they can run faster that prepuberty. Managing through this period isn't always easy because the body changes makes running more difficult and not as much fun. Unfortunately, half of females stop perusing sports during puberty in exchange for lipstick and other girly pursuits.
In terms of Mary Cain, chances are she took a mini break, went through a period where her training declined, gained a few pounds, which triggered puberty to start. Since her puberty had been delayed, if probably hit her suddenly. For female athletes, it is always better if puberty takes its normal course, 9th or 10th grade and get it out of the way. However, as a 20 year old, there is a lot of hope for her, I would not be surprised if she gets back to an elite level.
she also beat Anima Banks (she also competed against her locally in high school). Anima just graduated from Duke (went the NCAA route) and had a pr in the 800 of 2:02 this spring and a 4:14 1500, looks like she was in front of Mary for a bit and then got left behind a bit later on.
also, not looking to make excuses, but it looks like it was 86 degrees and 77% humidity so a "feels like" of between 95-99 degrees. Can imagine the track temp was a variable for all.

Damn that is a fine woman!
True. If Mary Cain looked like that 2-3 years ago she would be a millionaire by now. Imagine what Nike could do with that image for the best HS female runner ever.

He wasn't talking about puberty, champ.

That's a long time to be using complement instead of compliment.

You realize that that Canadian has run 2:01 this year for 800m? Of course she was going to beat Cain in a tactical race. Maybe Mary and her coaches should have researched the competition a little better and made a better race plan.
The girl in 3rd has a 4:09 SB too.

One exception to that: runner girls. There are certain college girls that I wonder if they have entered puberty yet.
That said, the late-bloomers can still become top runners as open athletes (Mary Decker being a major case),
Mary was no late-bloomer.
