Slagowski should be in the Bowerman mile, in my opinion. But either way, he's going to PR, big time. I'm certain of that.

I want slagowski racing hunter.
rojo is right. But with AT also in the same race. All three should probably be in the secondary race, not the Bowerman.
But the point is, put them in the same race! Great sports is about great competition. This year's three standout hs milers going at it, mano a mano a mano. Something that would actually be great for the sport.
Two things wrong with the way it's set up now.
They're all basically running set up time trials, instead of racing to see who is the best. How often do we have this kind of great opportunity at the hs level? Three genuine stars. And we're going to let it slip away. Stupid and disgraceful.
And perhaps even worse than that, we're teaching these kids at an early age to avoid going head to head with the best competition. Great lesson. Wonder why track isn't more popular? This is why.
I agree that I would like to see them race, but not at a Diamond League meeting.
Slagowski and Tamagno have something to gain just from beating Hunter. Even if they beat him in 4:01, it would be a dagger to his reputation and cement their status further. Hunter, on the other hand, if he runs 3:59 at Pre and gets second to last in the bowerman mile, people will say he didn't deserve to be there.
He is in another class in terms of his expectations, and rightfully so.
Let this be the moment where we they chase their individual marks, and later have them line up against each other in a high school only field.
Has anyone seen this years field for the Bowerman Mile? If Drew finishes anywhere but last it will be an amazing feat. Look at the names. Look at the pedigree of these runners. They are in a different class to Drew Hunter. I don't know of Drew's potential, I wish him the best of luck and hope he has a great run.
It would be a bit ridiculous to put Slagowski in this race. Already quite suprosing Drew has been allowed in.
Kiprop (and a couple others) can run the last 800m quicker than Drew or Slagowski could run an 800m fresh, if they want.
Ayanleh Souleiman (Djibouti) 3:47.32 (3:28)
Silas Kiplagat (Kenya) 3:47.88 (3:27)
Asbel Kiprop (Kenya). 3:48.50 (3:26)
James Magut (Kenya). 3:49.43 (3:30)
Abdelaati Iguider (Morocco) 3:49.09 (3:28)
Matthew Centrowitz (USA) 3:50.53 (3:30)
Taoufik Makhloufi (Algeria) 3:52.16 (3:28)
Ronald Kwemoi (Kenya) 3:52.57 (3:28)
Elijah Manangoi (Kenya) none (3:29)
Ben Blankenship (USA) 3:53.13 (3:35)
Evan Jager (USA). 3:53.33 (3:32)
Jakub Holusa (Czech Rep.) 3:53.46 (3:34)
Drew Hunter (USA) 3:57.81 (3:42)

I don't care if he came out a 3:43 guy, you don't qualify for the nation's premier mile race with a 3:59. Prove yourself first.
The Bowerman wasn't then what it is today either. In recent years 3:53 is pritnear DFL, not 6th like it was for Webb.
How can it be that Kiprop hasn't ran faster than 3:48! He's tried lots of times.
Maybe this time he'll uncork a 3:44.

Who do you think draws more viewers: a) a high school kid with a chance (however remote) of breaking Webb's record, or b) another 3:53 pro? What runner would increase the number of viewers if swapped for Hunter?
If they put another pro in instead of Hunter, I don't think anyone would say "hey, I wasn't going to tune into the Bowerman mile, but now that they've added a fourth 3:53 guy, I think I'll go ahead and watch." As it stands, plenty of people are going to tune in to see Hunter run.
You select your field to put on the best show. Usually this means taking the top X entries, but sometimes not. They've decided that Hunter will bring more eyes to the screen than any alternative, and they're probably right.
The reason Hunter is in the BM is because of the Oregon/Nike juggernaut. Nike wants Hunter locked-in to Nike, and he will be at Oregon just like King Ches. And if it turns out Hunter amazes with a big mile, say sub 3:55, guaranteed Nike will commercialize him very quickly. The pros are going to be very fast no matter what -- this is about Nike exploiting Hunter.
I really hope Hunter has a great race, but I have to say it's disappointing not to see him race against Slagowski. But we all know that Slag is going to Penn State, not Nike land.
All of this is setting up a HUGE performance for Slagowski.
The Slug will go 3:55.20 while Hunter runs around 3:56.92.

Slagowski 3:59 solo.
Hunter 3:57 with plenty of help to get him there.
Slagowski FTW
3:57 is still a lot faster than 3:59, not sure how much a pacer helps.
Have any of you watched Slagowski's 3:59? To me, that was the most impressive HS mile I've ever seen outside of Ryun & Webb. Yes, more impressive than Drew 3:57.81 indoors.
The issue also is that the International Mile was won in 3:55 last year. It is isn't outside of the realm of possibility that Slago can run 3:55. He hasn't been pushed this entire season.
I don't Slago OR Drew in a race that they can win. I'd prefer them to time trial this one.

It's not like the mile record means anything.
Would be cool to see 15yr old Jacob Ingebrigsten in the national mile as well.
May be the first 15 yr old to dip under 4:00!!
I predict Slag will win the Int'l mile
kiprop doesn't typically go for a fast one outside of monaco. if he did, that would string out the entire field and Hunter would have to run by himself and pick off stragglers at the end.
With 1:48/3:57.8i, I can see Hunter going 3:54 here.
Slagowski might do something similar.

Just out of interest, which of these athletes do you think will struggle more than Drew Hunter if the pace is fast?
I think if it is a flat out run (3:45 at least) Drew will come dead last.
But if the race is flat out as you suggest this could happen to anyone in the race, lol.

If the pace is slow, Hunter has a chance to catch a runner of guard who might have been boxed in or something and beat someone in a kick.
If they are strung out and all run close to their potential then the likelihood is Drew will come last.

Webb's record came during a" flat out" race and he hung on and past a couple of people. The others are going to be racing and Hunter will be going for a 3:52-3. Metric , I really wonder if you are over 15 years old and have ever raced.
