Wheating has run 1:44.5/3:30.9 . Dudes problem is staying healthy, not his race distance. Showing up 75th junior year of XC isn't remotely impressive. A guy like Webb was 11th as a freshman.
Was he a junior? Was that the fall after his Olympics? If so it would have been a short xc season for him which makes it even more impressive. Maybe I'm mistaken but the fact remains, he only ran a year or two in high school, extremely low mileage with no on site coach. Alan Webb was further along in his career as a high school senior than Wheating was as a college sophomore in terms of miles run, races raced and time spent with a good coach. Webb ran how many foot locker xc races? Wheating ran 0. I'm sure you understand that if Wheating had made xc any point of focus he could have finished much higher. Pretty sure he beat centro in a xc race (freshman year?) and Centro was an 8:40 high schooler who finished top 10 at NCAA cross later.
I'm also taking Lanana at his word on Wheating, because I think he knows a thing or two and likely more than you.
Maybe we'll see him do a 3000 at some point and have a better indication.
